Library's review

One hundred years ago, 376 British subjects from India arrived in Vancouver's Burrard Inlet aboard the Komagata Maru. The passengers had intended to challenge Canada's Continuous Passage Act, which, in an attempt to restrict immigrants from Asia, ruled that travellers must arrive by "uninterrupted

journey" from their country of citizenship. But there were no ships that saled to Canada directly from India; the Komagata Maru was a Japanese steamship that embarked from Hong Kong. After a two-month stalemate in which the passengers were not allowed to go ashore, and despite efforts from local supporters inside and outside the community who raised funds and rallied government on their behalf, the ship was ultimately denied and turned back.

But that was not the end of the story - or the journey. Because of the courage of those intrepid pioneers, many more came after them who did make a life - some who made significant contributions, including changing discriminatory laws like the right to vote and the Continuous Passage Act - in their new country. We profiled many of these pioneers in "Mehfil Magazine" in a column called Reflections, one of the magazine's more popular sections...

All of the people featured in this special publication struggled, sacrificed and survived, with pride and dignity, and cleared a path for those of us who came after. For that, we owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. and it is our privilege to honour them by sharing, and preserving, their inspirational stories and continuing the journey they started.'
