curatorial concept of the 2004 Shanghai Biennale "Techniques of the Visible" addresses these concerns. The exhibition aims to build a reciprocal relationship between technology and humanity by exploring the image-making technology, media history, and the influence of media on human existance.' - Fang Zengxian, Director of the 2004 Shanghai Biennale Academic Committee/Director of Shanghai Art Museum.

The catalogue includes preface by Chen Xiejun, forewords by Ma Bomin and Fang Zengxian, descriptions of works and artist biographies. There is also an explanation on the structure of the exhibition and the featured works in the catalogue are put together based on this structure.
