Library's review

Nearly ten years have pass since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (January 17, 1995). Should we now view this unprecdented disaster with greater objectivity, or should we instead try to ensure that our memories of the event do not fade? Tomoko Yoneda is a photographer who deals with the theme of

"memory." Thep ictures in Yoneda's Scene seies initially appear to be prerfectly ordinary scenes, but they are actually particular places burdened with the historical weight of memory (related to war and other events). The instant we become aware of this fact, the photograph arouse introspection and imagination. This exhibition, taking as its theme the tenth anniversary of the earthquake, consists of eight new, color photographs taken in Asiya as part of Yoneda's Scene series and ten never before shown, black and white photographs, which were taken in the Kobe area immediately after the earthquake. It is our hope that with art a a point of entry, the exhibition will encourage visitors to consider the significance of this ten year passage of time. (Exerpt taken from curatorial text)
