Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians suffered a devastating blow with the coming of the Europeans. The seventy-seven participants in this book come from extremely diverse backgrounds, but are bonded by their culture and a desire to bring change to the way indigenous Australians are viewed and treated. Many are sceptical but remain determined to make sure their culture does not disappear. With powerful simplicity, the interviews reveal the obstacles faced by indigenous people. Few remain untouched, either directly or indirectly, by the past policy of removing Aboriginal children from their families, and few have not had to contend with outright racism or, at best, negativity at some stage of their lives. These personal stories reveal a tenacity and optimism that is an inspiration to all.
