Cave Art may well be the definitive work on Paleolithic rock art to date, and will appeal to both the general reader and the enthusiast. Lavishly illustrated, the book contains the clearest reproductions of pre-historical rock art that I have ever seen in one volume. Furthermore, the art is

arranged chronologically by site, a feature that helps in establishing the context of the art and in comparing the style and content of individual works within one location. Jean Clottes is one of the world's foremost experts in the field, and his commentary on each work is generous and illuminating. He also provides an introduction with an overview of the scholarship on the art. Thankfully, he doesn't limit the book's purview to the caves of SW Europe, but also includes sections on prehistoric rock art of the Americas and Africa. This is a beautiful book, highly recommended.
