to help Feng. By staying with her all day and showing her the powers of wisdom, clear sight, equality, generosity, and right judgement Feng creates a beautiful drawing of a pheonix. It comes to life and flies her and all of her friends to the heavens to practice these virtues. This is a great story that shares the rich Asian culture with readers. The illustrations are full of color, life, and culture. I would read this story to students when learning about other cutltures' beliefs or when I think it's time to refresh student morals. Through the virtues, this book touches on themes of sharing, doing what is right, making smart decisions, and seeing clearly. Show Less

“The Girl Who Drew a Phoenix” is a great book to read to students when teaching them about good qualities and good behavior. For this reason I enjoyed the book because I liked how the message of the book could be related to any reader not just students. The main character in the story wants to

see a phoenix and when one appears it gives her a list of other phoenixes that she must find. One is the phoenix of equality. This phoenix says to her, “To have Equality you must pass through the fire of Selfishness! Draw away all Selfishness!” “Feng Huang drew and drew away all Selfishness, and suddenly she felt herself drawing Equality.” This is a deep message for kids to understand these words, but it would be a good book to use to start talking about these words to the class. This quote from the book sums up the main message in the best way, “In the multitude of words there certainly are mistakes. It is difficult to get a good word; it is easy to give a bad one. And much mischief comes from opening the mouth!” This basically is saying that without the good qualities given by the phoenixes it is easy to not be as kind as we could. Show Less
