Description: Dr. Diana Eck delights in America as the most religiously diverse nation in the world and offers her profound understanding of the complex challenges such diversity presents.
Dr. Eck considers the essential question facing American society to be how Americans of all faiths and believes can engage with one another to shape the country of positive pluralism. The great diversity of religious beliefs in the US has become what she calls a "Main Street phenomena," and she addresses religious pluralism in terms of global, national, civic and theological issues.
Dr. Eck notes that her own faith is not threatened by the fact that there are other spiritual paths to God." Democracy doesn't function well," she said, "if you're afraid of your neighbors." She argues that pluralism is not just about diversity but about engagement, and she urges individuals to engage through multifaith dialogue. -- box
