A film about St Francis, very much of its time (late 60s) with Donovan soundtrack and a distinct hint of hippydom. The lead performance by Graham Faulkner is convincing and there is good support although individual actors have relatively little scope for development. Alec Guinness hams it up a bit

as the Pope. Some will find it all too syrupy, and although it is visually ravishing it does not match up to Zeffirelli's slightly earlier 'Romeo and Juliet', or his later 'Jesus of Nazareth'.
