Description: What makes this an extremely attractive disc is the composer s clear love of the lyrical line. He is extremely sensitive to texts, his music always reflecting and amplifying the words he is setting. Much of the music here is radiantly beautiful. His well-known O Magnum Mysterium is one example, and his setting of Pablo Neruda s Ya eres mía (Now You are Mine) is ecstatically, even erotically beautiful. Those looking only for the pretty might find Cuatro Canciones challenging, but those willing to enter its rather mysterious and even dark world will find the music s underlying lyrical impulse beneath its edgy surface. Lauridsen s imaginative setting adds a clarinet and cello to the voice and piano, allowing for some remarkable colors. The colors that the composer creates capture perfectly the eerie combination of darkness and beauty inherent in the poems. Dirait-on is an imaginative piece, beginning with a lovely tune that will stay in your head, Dana Gioia s Prayer and Agee s famous Sure on this Shining Night make a lovely conclusion to the recording. Jeremy Huw Williams has a light and lyrical baritone, good clear diction, and a fine sense of what each piece is about. He can vary the color according to the mood, and conveys a very wide range of expression. Pianist Paula Fan also captures the wide range of moods and colors of the music. Soprano Caryl Hughes s lyric voice matches Williams perfectly. Anyone who enjoys American art songs is likely to find this a recording to be cherished. --Henry Fogel (Fanfare Magazine)
