Named Person: John Daido Loori

Description: John Daido Loori (1931-2009) was the abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery and founder of the Mountains and Rivers Order. A successor to Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi, Daido Roshi was a lineage holder in both the Rinzai and Soto schools of Zen.

Loori was born Catholic and raised in an Italian family in Jersey City, NJ. He served in the Navy, married, had 2 children and worked for years as a scientist. He married again, had a 3rd child and ran an art center. His studies with photographer Minor White led him to meditation, the study of Buddhism, and eventually to becoming an influential Zen master. Inspired by Master Dogan, Daido Loori founded Zen Mountain Monastery in Mount Tremper New York in 1980. He became known for his love of the environment and photography, and for the 8 Gates training matrix he developed. He was the author of more than 20 books.
