Description: RAISING THE SPARKS:
A PERSONAL SEARCH FOR A SPIRITUAL HOME IN JUDAISM
a film by Chuck Davis
featuring Rabbi Marcia Prager, Rabbi Daniel Siegel, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, David Zeller, Tirzah Firestone, Michael Lerner, Ted Falcon, and Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man.
60 min.
Award-winning filmmaker, Dr. Chuck Davis explores his own decision to return to the religion of his birth after 20 years of Buddhist practice. Upon the birth of his first son, Davis found himself with many questions about spirituality. In this extraordinary film, he sets out to discover a true spiritual path in his Jewish roots, one that he could authentically ask his children to take on. Davis' journey begins with Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi--founder of the Jewish Renewal Movement and former Wisdom Chair of Naropa University. Over the course of the Jewish liturgical year, Rabbi Zalman acts as both guide and counselor in Davis' quest. Davis also meets with Rabbis across Judaism's spectrum, engaging them in provocative discussions about the issues that have kept him at a distance with Judaism: the importance and relevance of Hebrew and the Torah, Jewish meditation, the place of prayer in secular life, the need for Jewish laws in a post modern world, and the problems and possibilities of inter-faith marriage. The power of Raising The Sparks is its profound ability, regardless of faith, to engage the viewer in an exploration of their own spiritual beliefs and spirituality as a whole.
