Description: Dr. Hoeller explores the significance of Gnosticism within present-day Christianity, especially as it relates to the Dead Sea Scrolls and Nagamadhi Library discoveries of the 1940's and the writings of psychologiest C. G. Jung. As to the connection with Jung, Dr. Hoeller states, "Jung knew that the one and only tradition associated with Christianity that regarded the human psyche as the container of the divine-human encounter was that of the Gnositcs of the first three centuries of our era. For this reason he called for a new appreciation of this ancient tradition, and particularly for a return to the Gnostic sense of God as an inner directing and transforming presence."
Stephan Hoeller was born in Hungary, and graduated from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, before moving to the United States. He is associate professor of comparative religions at the College of Oriental Studies in Los Angeles and the Director of Studies of the Gnostic Society of Los Angeles, where he lives.
