Description: The Publisher's Preface reads:
"A number of versions of the Dhammapada, the revered Pali compilation of the Buddha's essential teachings, are available in English today. While all these editions have merit, a definitive translation has yet to be published. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we make this version of the Dhammapada available, for it is the first truly authoritative version to appear in English.
"Translated from the Pali by the Venerable Ananda Maitreya, a highly respected Theravada monk and an accomplished scholar of Buddhism, the text was revised by Rose Kramer, a noted American semanticist and educator. Her revisions were fastidiously rechecked by the Ven. Ananda Maitraya to ensure the authenticity of the translation. The result of such painstaking effort is a translation of the Dhammapada that is at once impeccably accurate and highly accessible to modern Western readers.
"The Dhammapada was originally compiled for the growing community of Buddhist monks; it served as a basic guide for following the Buddha's teachings. Because its audience was primarily male, the language may sound a bit one-sided to modern readers. We have chosen, however, to remain true to the original text for in the end it is the teachings themselves which are important. Regardless of the limitations of language and culture, the wisdom of the Buddha transcends time and space and directly speaks to the heart of all humanity.
"We are honored to present this edition of the Dhammapada -- we hope that in its pages you will find inspiration and guidance. The Ven. Ananda Maitreya has said: 'If I were to recommend one book of all the Buddhist scriptures, it would be the Dhammapada. It contains all the wisdom of the Buddha; it is all you need.'"

Good clear poetic translation. Buddhism has always been interesting to me , as sometimes it approaches the level of philosophy so much as a religion - at least it does to my understanding. Good thoughts for living well.

Interesting. Maybe I had a bad translation but I found it odd to see references to the church, heaven, and hell.
