The original edition has something like 30 more pages than the abridged edition, which also has some of the original illustrations altered. If you can find the original edition, by all means purchase it rather than the abridged edition.

Richard Scarry illustrates many jobs people have, and tells stories that explain how those jobs happen. His explanations are more suited to the way things worked half a century + ago, but are good nonetheless. Like all Richard Scarry books, this makes a good reference.

I'm surprised by how vividly I remember some of these illustrations from when I was little. I must have poured over them for hours. I especially remember the cross-section of the boat for some reason.

It is dated - the women work in the home while the men work outside, etc. But still very

enjoyable. I joked to my friend that it was almost a communist manifesto - with the constant repetition of the word "worker," and the big heading, "EVERYONE IS A WORKER." Lolz.

I know this is the abridged version, but I can't remember what has been taken out. I wonder why they did that?

I grew up on Richard Scarry and it was always a favorite of mine! Shows children a glimpse inside the adult world and the jobs adults hold. It teachers about work and money and cooperation. Would be great if class hosted a profession day where parents came in to discussion their job or children

draw/write about their parents jobs and their own dream job!

This has large two page spreads illustrating various industries with jobs. It has animals wearing clothes doing all the jobs, so a child can imagine themself in any role instead of picking the pic that looks like them.

So... I actually had gotten the original edition, which is unabridged, and it's

really expensive if the seller knows what it is. Random House had reduced the number of pages over years in order to keep the price point the same, eventually going from around 90 to around 60 pages. For anyone looking for the extra pages, the British edition currently in print has different missing pages and it has the house wife and sewage treatment plant pages. So, if you want all pages, you practically can get the American edition and the British edition and between the two of them, get all the pages, which is much cheaper than trying to get an unabridged early print of this. Also, the best way to get these rare editions is to buy on eBay and look at photos of the cover illustration, and wait until one comes up in a lot where the seller does not know that that one is rare.
