So, a fun idea, but unfortunately, this book is dated and gender stereotyped. With books like this -- depicting all eight different animals as male -- no wonder kids go to the zoo and call every single animal "him" unless it is obviously nursing an infant. Sandra Boynton's books are a great
Show More
alternative, and not so painfully and unnecessarily gendered.

REVIEW: A classic children's storybook about a youngster looking for a perfect pet is sure to delight a new generation of readers.

This book is appropriate for ages pre-k through first grade. It repeats several words to help children with word recognition. It also teaches children about the different animals they will see at a zoo. This is a lift-the-flap book, so children will enjoy a suprise on every page.

Dear Zoo is a wonderful picture book about the zoo. It has many lifts and engaging pictures to keep the children's attention.

Seems great and reminds me of 'please send a panda', Which I loved as a child. Unfortunately my baby doesn't get flaps yet!

When a child asks the zoo to send a pet, they send an assortment of silly animals, hidden in lift-the-flap packages.
Liam and I both love this one, the board book is a great size, although I was constantly worried he'd tear the flaps. I changed the snake's description to slithery instead of scary,
Show More
I'm not sure if he'll be afraid of snakes or not.

A charming lift-the-flap book that has become a mainstay in its genre. The story is suitably simple, aimed for the youngest of readers, and the subject of collecting exotic pets will appeal to a wide range of ages. What sets this book apart from other books like it, though, is the creativity of the
Show More
various flaps. Some are cages, some have the animals peeking out the top, some are baskets ... it is fun to guess what animal you will find, based on the shape and clues in the flaps, along with the clues from the story. Making the appropriate animal sound is another fun game to accompany the reading. Both my daughters love this book, making me a happy mama.

The 3-year olds got a kick out of this guessing game. Lift the flap and find what animal the zoo is sending for the wrong pet

brief, cute, fun for naming animals

Flap books are always super exciting for me and young children! A boy is searching for the perfect pet! Fun to guess what is behind each flap and possibly discuss animal sounds as well. Fun read for early childhood that keeps them guessing and hearing the sounds they guess would be the best :)

Clever interactive book about a kid who writes the zoo for a pet. This book respects kid's intelligence--it never names the animals, so it's a good converstation starter with the little ones. Good for talking about adjectives, animal names and characteristics, respecting children's intelligence.

Great book to show children what kind of pets are the ones that they can have at home and ones belong to the zoo.

Children like a repetitive structure because it helps them understand what's going on and predict what will happen next. (For that matter, adults like it too! Repetition is a crucial part of traditional storytelling and modern-day speechifying.)

This one is about a child who wrote to the zoo for a
Show More
pet and, being a zoo, they sent him/her all manner of exotic, but unsuitable animals before finally hitting on a puppy. Each animal is hidden inside a box of some sort, that's where the flaps come in.

It's great fun (at least the first thousand times, then it's only a little fun) to lift the flaps and adlib some animal sounds to describe whatever's hiding. And, as a plus, the flaps on this book are actually fairly sturdy - we haven't had a rip yet, and we've had this book a few years.

Definitely a keeper.

Jen loves it, she loves the flaps!

Dear Zoo has become a classic of the children's literature canon and rightly deserves to be so. In this simple and sweet board book, the unnamed narrator notes how he/she wanted a pet and so wrote the zoo for one. The zoo responds by shipping over some animals. The first several tries are
Show More
unsuccessful as the animals shipped are too big, too tall, too scary, etc. At last, the perfect pet arrives. Children from infants to toddlers to preschoolers absolutely love lifting the flap on each page to see what the zoo has shipped next. This is a great book for spending some quality time with the young ones in your life, allowing them to manipulate the flaps, identify animals (adding in the sound effects is always fun!), and otherwise have great fun while gaining pre-literacy skills.

This is an adorable book for very young children. The zoo sends various animals that are supposed to be pets and none of them work. The animals sent are behind a box that is the flap and you have to open it to discover what animal was sent. In the end, a puppy was sent and everything worked out.

Children will of course love the idea of a pet lion, etc., but I dunno, maybe this is the millennium we should stop promoting animals in cages to children.

This cute little book is perfect for pre-k 1 age level. In the book, the zoo sends a different animal each time to be a pet. However, each animal is turned down until the end when the zoo sends the perfect pet, a puppy dog! I read this book to my babies at work often and they love it each time.
They love when i lift each flap to reveal the different animals.

I haven't read this book since May 2013, so that means now is a good time for a reread. I can't go a year without reading this storytime favorite.

Young readers love lifting the flaps to discover the animals the zoo has sent-a monkey, a lion, and even an elephant! But will they ever find the perfect pet?

Our whole family loves this, but it's another kid's book where all the characters are male. Gotta change those pronouns up.
