This is a biography/picture book. It talks about Martin Luther King and that he was one of America's great leaders. He was born on January 15,1929. His father was a pastor, mother was a teacher. It tells about his life as a child, playing with friends, playing sports and singing in his church
Show More
choir. It also talked about the struggles he faced being an African American boy living before desegregation. Throughout his childhood, he read books about African American leaders. He was a good student. He finished high school two years early and was 15 when he entered Morehouse College in Atlanta. He became a minister. He then studied for a doctorate at Boston University. There he met Coretta Scott. They fell in love and married. In 1954, Martin Luther King began his first pastor job in Montgomery, Alabama. The next year was when Rosa Parks was arrested. King led a protest and African Americans refused to ride the buses. His house was bombed which angered his followers. He always told his followers to be peaceful. "We must meet hate with love." The protest lasted almost a year when it ended there were no more "white only" sections on buses. He lead peaceful protests against segregation. In 1963 he led the biggest march in Washington D.C. where gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee on April 4, 1968.

I remember reading this book when I was in elementary school. I always loved learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. I wrote many reports on him growing up.
The paintings are life-like and went well with the story.

I would read this book to go along with Black History Month. We would discuss how Dr. King and how he was a great leader who helped end inequality. This is also a great social studies lesson because we can talk about what it was like in Dr. King's time as an African American. We can discuss how in present time, we treat everyone with respect.

noitced that there were several places with "whites Only" signs and balcks were not allowed there. Martin was a good student and he enterd moore house college at the age of 15. He graduated Moore house college and married Colletta Scott. His frist job was as a pastor in Alabama. Martin led a protest to have black stopped from being excluded from places. As a result his house was attacked. In 1963 Dr. King had a march in Washington that had 200,000 people attend where he gave the I have a Dream speech. In 1964 he was awarded the nobel peace prize.

I like this book since it had colorful pictures and explained simply and clearly the life of Martin Luther King.

Extension ideas 1. I would have the student write their own I have a dream speech where they can share what they would like to do when they are older.

2. Have students write 2 things they thought were important in the life of Martin Luther King.

Book of Martin Luther King Jr. and his life. He was a pastor, a friend and a racial rights activist. He dealt with race his whole life. He entered college and graduated. Martin Luther King Jr. led many protest against racial background and this book gave readers a little insight to all that he
Show More
accomplished throughout his life. led a protest to have black stopped from being excluded from places. In 1963 Dr.Martin Luther King had a group of people who he marched into Washington with and gave the legendary "I have a dream " speech.
This book had amazing art and gave readers as said a "little" insight to how life was in Dr. Kings time, but gives them enough knowledge to recognize the difference in the world we live in today.

Extention Ideas have children draw and paint Dr. King giving his famous "I have a dream" speech.
Another have children wright out what they like in the story and share it with the class and why?

This story is a picture book written about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. The story was written about Martin Luther King, Jr from his birth to his senseless death. The story addresses the many difficulties that MLK overcame to be the leader he was to so many people. The story talk of how MLK
Show More
died for his belief in freedom for everyone.
I enjoyed this book and the way it described MLK, Jr. The book showed not only the successes, but the struggles that MLK overcame to be a successful leader. The book acknowledges many issues that African Americans faced long ago. The fact that some of these issues are still around saddens me.
This story could be used to research Martin Luther King, Jr. and his life. The book could be used concerning issues with racism. This story could be used to note powerful leaders in our history.

This is a good example of a biography. First off, it is a biography because David Adler is telling the story of Martin Luther King. He tells the facts about MLK. He tells of when he was born and where he grew up, up through his peace marches and talks, until the day he was shot and killed. All the
Show More
facts in this story are true and could be found elsewhere. They are told simply and friendly for children though.

There is no particular character, point of view, setting, or style. They are the way they are because the book is a biography.

This is a book that tells about the life of Martin Luther King Junior. He lived a normal life with his parents and siblings. His life childhood consisted of athletics and his church choir. Growing up he didn’t understand we he couldn’t be friends with certain people because of the color of his

skin. He finished high school two years early and attended college where became a pastor and married Coretta Scott. He lived a life fighting for equal rights and against segregation. He was assassinated on April 4, 1967.

I enjoyed this book because it is a biography about the life of Martin Luther King Junior, and the struggles he went thru. It is a picture book written in story form so it is easier for younger readers to understand.

I would have my students write an “I have a Dream” paper about themselves. The paper would be about something they desire to happen in their lives.

I would have my students look for other people that were affected by segregation and write a brief report about the person they researched.

This story describes Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life in picture book form. The time frame of this book goes along with some of the novels that I have read about MLK Jr. I read this read aloud story before I read Martin's Big
Show More
Words as a read aloud. It gives the kids background information and reminds them about his life and his achievements. As we read Martin's Big Words, the students and I make connections from the picture book to the novel and the have the images from the picture book to help them visualize the novel and make more connections with the real photos in the novel.

Summary:
This book was a short, picture book about the Life of Martin Luther King Jr. It was like a short and simple biography for children. It discissed part of his childhood, like hoe he used to have white friends but then their parents wouldn't let them play with him anymore because of his skin
Show More
color. It discussed what he liked to do when he was younger, like sing in church, and play basketball and football. It even told about how he started college at a young age after he finished high school early and went on to get married and how he played a big role in the fight against segregation and discrimination.

Personal Reflection:
I thought that this was a really good book, especially for young kids. It's not packed full of too much information and big words. It was able to tell a lot in a few words which is good for young children. I really liked the illustrations also. They were colorful and almost looked liked portraits. They were very lifelike.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Have the students write a paragraph about why the think segregation and discrimination is wrong.
2. Have the children write a letter to Martin Luther King Jr. Allowing them to express themselves, whether they just want to tell him how brave or smart he was, or if they just want to thank him for his dream and efforts.

A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. tells the story of the life of the great civil rights leader in a way that is easy enough for a young child to understand. I liked that it kept the explanations simple. For instance, MLK’s mother tells him that black people were brought over from Africa
Show More
in chains and sold as slaves. Even though they were set free a long time ago, some people still felt like they should be treated fairly. I think more detail than that might too upsetting for a younger elementary school child. I know when I tried to read my oldest son a more detailed picture book about MLK when he was in kindergarten, he got really upset and two years later STILL doesn’t want to talk in detail about MLK’s life and the life of black people in the sixties.

This book does end with MLK getting shot in Memphis so you may want to omit that part, depending on how sensitive your child is. There is a time-line of events in MLK’s life on the very last page that is helpful.

The illustrations look like watercolor paintings to me and are very nicely done. I think this is a great first book about Martin Luther King, Jr. for a kindergartener or first grader.

This story lets children know how our world was before they were born. And if Dr. King didn't stand up for what they believed in it would still probably be this way.

I liked this book for several reasons. The first reason I enjoyed reading this book is because the author did an excellent job of developing the plot and mood. The book started out very sad as African Americans are separated from white people and do not have the same rights. However, the mood
Show More
changes by the end of the book because the laws changed and people then had equal rights. The author did a great job of highlighting the important events that occurred in Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and displayed the impact that he had on history. I also enjoyed reading the book because the illustrations were very bright and colorful therefore I found them to be very appealing. Also, I think that this book is an excellent resource as it has a list of important dates at the end of the story. The final reason that I liked this book is because it pushes readers to think about conflicts including, segregation, discrimination, and the Civil Rights Movement. The main idea of this book is to inform readers on Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and show his significance in history.

This picture book explains and illustrates Martin Luther King Jr's life. Martin learned about racial segregation early in life, and did not like how him and his friends were being treated. Martin led marches and protests demanding fair laws for all people no matter their race. Martin earned the
Show More
Nobel Peace prize, but unfortunately a man named James Earl Ray decided to kill Martin. Martin died being free at last.

Martin Luther King Jr, was a brave man who helped thousands of people in many different ways. If there were more people in the world like Martin, as a nation we could be a greater nation.

One classroom extension idea is to incorporate history and discuss what protests are, and have the students do some critical thinking and think as students what they could protest against. Another classroom extension idea that would to also incorporate history and talk about other great leaders such as Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, and George Washington Carver.
