This book really bothered me. The overt prejudice is disturbing. Everyone with white skin is good, everyone with dark skin is either evil or weakminded - no exceptions. I read it with hopes that they would redeem the general theme with, for example, one of the Black Lala's children showing some

kindness to the white captives. But no, if one of the Sultan's children came to their aid, it was one with lighter skin because - as it was pointed out quite bluntly - his mother must have been European. I tried to be understanding of the time period this was written in, but it simply no longer plays in today's world where we are supposed to understand groups of people with any skin color will contain examples of good and bad.
