This story follows a girl as she takes a trip with her aunt. She describes special details, such as the fact that they're going to wrap their food "like my aunt did as a little girl" or that they're going to make lots of stops and "nobody will be there to say uh-uh". They have a great time just

flitting about, eating dinner at a fancy restaurant and buying "as much junk as we want" from garage sales. You can really feel how much the two love each other and love spending special times together.

In feel, this book reminds me a lot of My Mama Had a Dancing Heart - you might try reading the two of them together.

Summary:
A young girl tells of an upcoming road trip she is taking with her Aunt Martha to North Carolina. She tells of all the markets they’ll shop at, the rain they’ll walk in, and the peaches they’ll buy and eat. She ends with telling us that they’ll have a lot of girl talk to do. “No

boys and no men—just us women.”

Reflection:
Oh, how I wish I had an Aunt Martha! Their trip sounds like one I’d like to take.
I was enjoying the story so much that I neglected to look at the pictures the first time reading it. I went back afterwards to see the illustration. They aren’t anything fantastic, but with such a fun tale to read, you hardly notice (at least, I didn’t).

Extension Ideas:
I think it would be fun to bring out a map of the U.S. and learn about the states mentioned in the book. It would be a great geography lesson. Another fun thing to do would be to have the kids share of places they’ve visited and maybe bring in a souvenir they brought back with them.

This story is about a girl and her aunt who go on a road trip without any boys. They made many stops and had fun just taking their time and doing whatever seemed fun at the time.

This multicultural book has awesome illustrations but is kind of stereotypical.

In the classroom I would get a U.S. map

and we would look at the states that they went through. Also, I would ask the students what family trips they have been on and what states they were in.

This book is about a young girl and her aunt who decide to take a road trip. Along the way they stop and do many different things on the way to where they are going.

I didnt really like this book too much. The picture's were great but I thought that it was a little weird and slow. I don't think that

many children expecially boys would like it. I also thought that it was a little sterotypical.

In the classroom, I would have the children write a journal entry about things that they love to do with someone special. I would also have give the children a map and then I would show them where Virginia and Maryland. After showing them i would have them color the map.

A young girl and her aunt plan a trip together to visit family at a distance. A very positive message for young girls about taking time for family, planning and executing an event and not needing men to do this. My favorite comment is that it is "just us women" even though the narrator is a young

girl.
