I just caught myself crying after reading the book “Georgia in Hawaii – When Georgia O’Keeffe Painted What She Pleased” by Amy Novesky and illustrated by Yuyi Morales. I love this book! I think both, the storyline and the art are amazing. I can affirm for sure that I could use this book to

teach 5th and 6th graders. I can see them exploring Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings and maybe some of the focal points of Hawaii. I will buy this book for myself. I don’t know about other adults, maybe some of my friends that share my passion for flowers, paintings and Hawaii would appreciate it as well. The story and the illustration are very beautiful and touching. Great addition to my personal library.

I liked Yuyi Morales' illustrations quite a lot, but I found the story odd. I think what I got out of it was that Georgia wanted to choose what she wanted to paint, and that she did not want to paint a pineapple. I just didn't quite get why I was supposed to care about this.

Georgia goes to Hawaii to pain a pineapple for a company, but the company won't let her stay by the farm so she decided she wasn't going to paint a pineapple. So she goes around Hawaii and ends up painting so many things but none of them was a pineapple. the company was mad. so she went

ahead and gave the what they wanted and she painted a pineapple.

Another great picture book exploring a famous artist. Georgia O'Keeffe. This book shows Georgia's strength and ability to be creative in her artistry despite the pressure that was placed on her to paint only assigned images. This book gives an insightful look into her trip to Hawaii and how she

painted what she saw and not what she was told. In the end however. she did paint the Pineapple as she was asked to. But she did so when she chose to.

I enjoy Georgia O’Keefe’s art and was curious to see how her story would be told as a picture book. This particular vignette was an interesting portrayal and demonstrated O’Keefe’s independence and strong will; always positive messages for students to acquire.

in fourth grade can be made by reading this story to introduce the artist before beginning a unit on O’Keefe and other nature artists.

A beautiful book! I loved that it captured the spirit and strength of the artist and her work! The subtitle words, "painted what she pleased" really sums it up! Lovely!

I never knew O'Keeffe spent time in Hawaii, so it piqued my interest to run across this title seeing as I'm used to her desert work. Even better, I was doubly excited when I found that Yuyi Morales did the illustrations as she is one of my absolute favorite children's book artists(and authors). The

illustrations are so appropriately fluid, vibrant, and lush--combining well the styles of both O'Keeffe and Morales--and Novesky offers enough engaging information to make it an interesting story. I look forward to exploring the near 20 paintings of O'Keeffe's work inspired by the islands.
