Description

Comics for Choice is an anthology of comics about abortion. As this fundamental reproductive right continues to be stigmatized and jeopardized, over sixty artists and writers have created comics that boldly share their own experiences, and educate readers on the history of abortion, current political struggles, activism, and more. Lawyers, activists, medical professionals, historians, and abortion fund volunteers have teamed up with cartoonists and illustrators to share their knowledge in accessible comics form. The stories in Comics for Choice showcase a wide range of abortion experiences from a diverse array of voices: trans voices, older voices, activist voices-relatable voices. With passionate pen strokes, artists share highly personal, moving, and even funny stories that defy stigma and stereotypes. From the days of illegal abortion services, to nationwide legalization, to modern-day struggles of clinic closures and unequal access, contributors give an entertaining primer on the history of abortion in America, and how far we still have to go. Readers will be encouraged to get involved-standing up for abortion rights, fighting abortion stigma, making links between intersecting forms of oppression, and learning about reproductive justice.… (more)

Media reviews

The intergenerational and intersectional wisdom that Comics for Choice collects will be essential as the movement struggles against the forces that would drag Americans, and those abroad affected by US development policy, back there.

The book is at once a rallying cry, a tender lament, and song of liberation that will resonate long after the final page is turned.
Informative, enlightening, and with a robust bibliography, Comics for Choice is a beautiful and thorough education about modern reproductive health and abortion care.
This is an important and timely collection that shows to best advantage that comics “have the power to connect with readers, challenge pre-conceived notions, increase knowledge, and ultimately tackle stigma.” The main challenge will be having the collection circulate beyond the already

I didn't expect to side down and read this all in one night when I received the review copy. But I did, and it was worth it.

As a collection of comics, this is a very well done set. A few are entirely forgettable, and there are a few that are drawn in a way that makes them hard to read, or just too

long, but the majority? The majority are well done, thoughtful pieces. One in particular, I really thought seemed like the beginning to a much longer series that I would love to read every issue of.

It serves as a very chilling reminder of how misinformation and bad politics, and the political agenda against women have poisoned the entire debate around choice. The idea that it could be re-criminalized, especially by Trump, who wants to punish women in the process, is scary, especially while reading these personal stories. It made me think about the women I know who have had abortions, and it made me realize all the women in our society who are stronger than they are ever given credit for.

Pick this up, you won't regret it.

I generally try to avoid subject matter this depressing, but slap it into a comic book format and I cannot help inflicting it upon myself. The writing consistently displays powerful personal narratives and informative points of view though the art gets a little rough in places.
