Description

In this, her first collection of short stories, Winterson reveals all the facets of her extraordinary imagination. In prose that is full of imagery and word-play, she creates physical and psychological worlds that are at once familiar and yet shockingly strange.

Enter the fecund mind of Jeanette Winterson, english writer, and land softly on an alien, yet vaguely familiar world, not science fiction yet not the short story writing found in Redbook. A Twilight Zone of the short story. This brilliant woman has a mind on a different frequency than yours or

mine. And more power to her. Let's hope she doesn't burn out young.

Winterson, Jeanette. The World and Other Places: Stories. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1998. A mixed collection of short stories. Some were too subtle and modern for me: The Poetics of Sex, Holy Matrimony, The Green Square. However, some of the stories---esp. some of the more fantastical
Show More
stories---are delightful. I loved the two ``Disappearance'' stories, ``The Green Man'', ``Turn of the World'', ``Newton'', ``Orion.'' Winterson's writing is among the most vivid of any I've read, and her imagination is wonderful.

A pretty solid collection of surrealistic stories from the queen of odd things.

"The World and Other Places" is a collection of short stories, each entirely independent, yet tenuously linked. I found it a rough beginning - the first few essays did not draw me in as much as most of Winterson's work does, but by the end I was thoroughly engrossed. Several of the stories really
Show More
stood out to me beyond all the rest - Atlantic Crossing, Disappearance I, Turn of the World and The World and Other Places were some of my favorites. I don't think this is one of Winterson's strongest novels, but it is still eminently readable and enjoyable if you have the time to really savor it.

An uneven collection of short stories that often border on 'clever, clever' ideas, striving for the timelessness of a fable by Borges.
However, there are a few that work well, such as the simplicity of The 24-hour Dog, with its well placed metaphors and images, or have an emotional pull, such as The
Show More
Green Man.
The language is always beautiful, but the stories usually try too hard. Worth trying for the imagery.

Each story could be a novel in itself: Winterson's fiction is compelling because she teaches a little bit about the physical world while at the same time leading the reader on a spectacular emotional journey. She is like a naturalist of the inner life, pointing out highlights along the way. Her

writing is so beautiful it may make you cry.

It's hard to know what to say about this collection of Winterson's short stories. The stories themselves are such unconventional, unexpected flights of realistic-seeming fancy, but her work is so much more than that. It's very possible to lose the rhythm of the story by being caught up in the
Show More
language.

As with any collection, there are some pieces here I enjoyed more than others, but even the less inspired plots were still beautifully written, so I can't really complain.

This could be a good intro to Winterson for those who are not familiar with her writing style and storytelling. I am not sure if I would recommend it to hardcore Winterson fans. Many of the shorts have elements, characters, and great lines from her novels. The stories span a good portion of her
Show More
writing career. They are certainly mini-marvels with well-told stories in a language that is very much her signature. A good collection and a must-have for short story fans.

Unforgettable images, scenes. The young aviator and his family nights of imaginary flights.
