‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper tells the story of Cat, Squrriel and Duck. They all have their share of work to make pumpkin soup together until one day when Duck decides he wants to stir the soup instead of measuring the salt. Cat and Squirrel don’t like this so Duck leaves in huff. He is

gone for the whole day, leaving Cat and Squrriel to wonder what horrible things are happening to Duck alone in the forest. In the end, Duck returns home and the animals discover that maybe switching things up every once in awhile isn’t such a bad thing, especially if it helps out a friend.

The story itself is very cute and while it sounds a little cliché and diaditic, it doesn’t seem that way when you are reading. The characters are interesting and for a short picture book, they have a lot of personality. The illustrations in ‘Pumpkin Soup’ won the Kate Greenaway Award for Children’s Illustrations and it’s easy to see why. The paintings are very soft and muted but Cooper uses a lot of oranges and reds in the pictures so they feel very warm. Cat, Squrriel and Duck look so soft that you just want to reach through the page and pet them and their expressions and attitudes are very realistic. I quite enjoyed the extra effort Cooper put in the illustrations with a little ladybug and junebug appearing on every page, like the mouse in the Mercer Mayer books and each illustrations compliments and adds to the text. A very good book to read to your little ones, especially on a cold fall day.

Pumpkin Soup is a cleverly told tale of a family of animals who all live together in the woods and have their individual responsibilities to take care of in order to make the household run smoothly, until, that is, one day when Duck decides that it should be his turn to make the soup, and leaves

when not given the opportunity to do so. The illustrations are detailed, somewhat exaggerated, and richly colored, making the reader want to turn the pages to see what will happen next. This would be a great book to teach about the themes of loyalty, friendship, cooperation, fairness, and taking turns. I also enjoy reading it to my students during the fall.

This story shows you the true meaning of friendship. I love how even if they get angry with each other they forgave each other and didn't let anything get in the way of there friendship.

Different - though the main characters are just as cuddly and fuzzy as their counterparts in most typical picture-books, the story and the rest of the illustrations are richer, more complex, intense, and even a bit scary (though it's a fall story, not a Halloween story). One illustration even has

the characters squabbling so heatedly that the symbols for cuss-words are floating about. I appreciated the intensity and recommend the story - but you want to read it before sharing it with your tiny ones. Oh, and be sure to buy a cooking pumpkin first, too, because the recipe looks oh-so delicious, and nutritious.
