Description

"Being a dad is eleven jobs in one! This unique picture book for very young readers celebrates the many jobs being a parent encompasses: A receptionist scheduling important meetings (for playdates), an architect designing buildings (or pillow forts), an inspector (of diapers!).... When Dad gets home from his day job at the office, he never knows which job will be waiting for him, but he knows it'll be fun! Each rhyming spread features intimate, familiar, comforting and humorous depictions of family life through a wholly original -- and amazing! -- needle-felted lens"--Provided by publisher.

This sweet story is a look at a father’s two job. Okay, only his at home job taking care of his kids. The rhymes are cute and sweet and the ‘illustrations’ are amazing. Plus, I love how in the end the author talks about how he gets his illustrations, and even introduces the reader to some of
Show More
the techniques her uses. Pure gold.

After reading Great Job, Mom! I felt it was only fair to read Great Job, Dad! to my grandaughter. She also enjoyed this one and thought it was funny for some reason. Her dad is a stay at home dad so I know he does a lot of the things in the book with his kids. Again, she didn't understand all the
Show More
words such as chauffeur or computer engineer, but with the illustrations I was able to explain what each word meant. This is a celebration of fathers and all they do for their families besides their nine to five job. Each two-page spread has a gorgeous illustration and a two line stanza that is completed on the next page. The rhyming cadence is easy to read and makes for good pacing. The author includes some information in the back on how the illustrations are created. Each one is a work of art. If you have a child who is artistic, get them this book or its companion Great Job, Mom! to show them the art and allow them to learn about the process. I definitely recommend this to families as well and primary classrooms. The publisher generously provided me a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

This is a cute book celebrating all of the many jobs that fathers do throughout the day. (manager, waiter, chauffeur, inspector, judge, computer engineer, librarian, pilot, architect, receptionist, and astronomer)
The illustrations are unique. The author made wool figures through needle felting.
Then he posed the figures in different settings and took pictures.
My only disappointment was that there were no pictures of a mother in the book. I understand that the author wrote a book about moms too, but children need to see moms and dads working together as a family.

As a dad myself, I was immediately attracted to this book. The actual text is pretty standard -- dads do a lot of things -- but the artwork raises the whole thing by at least a letter grade, and makes it a joy to read.

Of particular note is the "making of" section in the back, where adults (and
Show More
interested kids) get to see behind the scenes of how the photographs were taken. I was particularly impressed with how the artist played with scale in order to photograph small figures in full-sized environments.

In a sense, this is an art book masquerading as a children's book, but so what? It was beautiful and I'm proud to have it on my shelf. When my daughter gets a bit older, I'll be happy to read it to her, and maybe it will spur her imagination to some photography projects of her own.

Wow! This was a masterpiece of a picture book. Not only are the painstakingly-crafted felt figures simply a marvel, but the rhymes and message are good too. It's an ode to dads and all of the jobs they do at home, from librarian to waiter to chauffeur. I often see picture books with amazing
Show More
illustrations but a not-so-great story, or vice versa. That was not the case with this book. Every aspect of it was on point.

Thank you to Tundra Books and LibraryThing for the advanced copy of this book!*

Great Job, Dad by Holman Wang is a picture book showing the many jobs, besides his outside work as a manager, that Dad does. He is a receptionist, taking messages for his two kids, a librarian at bedtime, a computer engineer when glitches happen as well as judge, chauffeur, and waiter. It is
Show More
written in a manner that applies to dads in general, not just single dads as the title might make you think.

I was really taken by the crisp, modern lines of the illustrations and more so when I read how he did them. He hand sews each character out of wool, using a wool felting technique, and makes the other items from wood, all done to scale. On the judge pages this includes his son and daughter pointing fingers at each other at a wooden picnic table with spilled milk, French fries on the ground which a puppy is enjoying and more. He creates his scene set in the appropriate indoor or outdoor location and then ‘shoots’ the scene. Using different photographic techniques he completes his illustrations. The detail is amazing.

This book could be read to any young child from toddler up, and read by a child age seven or eight. The illustrations would engage any young reader/listener.

I received this book through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers program.

This book by Holman Wang celebrates the many things that fathers do with their children. There is a companion volume, not surprisingly titled, Great Job, Mom! The story is cute and cuddly and mainly supports the art which was done through needle felting in wool. The back of the book explains how
Show More
the photographs were taken although it doesn't explain how the figures are made. Your children might not appreciate all the hard work that went into making this book but they will appreciate the celebration of all dad does in their lives. Dad will probably appreciate it as well! Look closely at the front cover and you'll notice that the amp is turned off and the volume level is at 0. Which is to say that everything else is amazingly realistic.

How many jobs does your dad have? Holman Wang shows us that fathers aren’t limited to one 9-5 job. Many hold a lot more than one or two. He gives job descriptions for a lot of the tasks that fathers perform daily. The name of the jobs are actual jobs! The simple pictures appeal to young children
Show More
and they can identify with the jobs. Happy Father’s Day, daddy!

I received this children’s picture book in exchange for an honest review. The photographs of the miniature figurines that Holman Wang creates are very interesting, and are sure to capture the attention of young children. Each scene captures a moment in time between a father and his children. Most
Show More
kids will be able to relate to these scenes.

I highly recommend this book to new fathers, and their children. It would be perfect for Father’s Day!

As a teacher, I can tell you that this book would be a great addition to any preschool or primary-grade classroom. You could have the young students take pictures of their own creations, to tell a story of what they do with their fathers!

My only criticism is that the book would have been more inclusive of all fathers if the author did not specify the “manager” job at the beginning of the story. It would have been better to leave it at “my father works”. Not all fathers work as managers.

My granddaughter (5 yrs old) and I enjoyed this book very much. While the storyline is the familiar “what dad and/or mom do for you every day”, it is illustrated by photographs of hand made figurines and miniature furniture, providing more depth and interest than drawings often do.

The second
Show More
half of the book was our favorite, in it the author tells and shows how he made the figurines and dioramas, and some photo techniques to make them look realistic. This inspired us to get out some action figures and doll house furniture and photograph some scenes of our own, a fun and rewarding project.

I really liked the how the pictures were created for this book. Great Job, Dad! Was a fun book to read to my preschool classroom. They really enjoyed it.

I love each page and all the incredible detail that went to everything. Championing all that fathers do in fun ways was a delight to read.
