With very simple text and fresh watercolor illustrations, Stead regales Ruby's search for a friend. Illustrations carry the story. When Ruby asks another bird, "are you ever afraid because you are small?" Stead's answer is in illustration not text: A huge flock of birds together form the shape of a

very large elephant walking with other elephants (Ruby the eye). Reminiscent of Swimmy by Leo Lionni, this would be a great pairing.

This is a simple story about a bird named Ruby. I had a little difficulty discerning the central message of this story. I believe the author was trying to make a correlation between a tiny bird amongst big animals and one person and a big world. All in all, the story didn't really hold my interest.

Young readers probably will enjoy the dialogue between the animals as well as the illustrations. Probably the thing I liked the least with this book was the ending. I just felt that it really left the reader hanging and me a little confused. The story ends with Ruby saying, "Would you like to meet my friends?" Overall, I just never really got into the book.

Summary: "Hello, My Name is Ruby" is a story about a little bird trying to find a friend in a very big world. Ruby first meets a bird who invites Ruby to go flying. He then meets other birds, a giraffe, and even a penguin. Towards the end of the story, Ruby meets other birds who look just like him.

They all become friends, and Ruby then asks if the birds want to meet HIS friends (every animal he met in the story!).

Review: This was a simple, yet fun to read story about Ruby. All Ruby wants to do is make friends, even if they are ten times his size. Young children will love pointing out the many different animals Ruby encounters. I also enjoyed the crayon illustrations that were on each page. Love-able characters and colorful illustrations make for a great preschool read.

I really enjoyed this book because it shows that anyone can be your friend, even if they do not look like you. The little bird, Ruby tried so hard to be friends with everyone, not matter how big or small they were. At the end of the story, she findsbirds that look just like her and she introduces

them to her new friends.
