Such is the case in Blood of Heaven - I won't give away ANY of the plot here, because the book works best as a complete surprise. For a Christian reader, it's a very contemplative look at how faith overcomes anything - nature, personality, compulsion. What part of his transformation is due to some mysterious DNA, and what part does faith play in it?
