I found this a fascinating book in many ways but I felt somewhat unconvinced by its treatment of the Old Testament. While I am happy with the idea of a struggle of voices in the OT, Williams, I think, sometimes tries too hard to make the texts fit the theory that there is a 'revelation of the

inocent victim' going on. I was also a bit dissapointed to see no treatment of Holy War as that is a major part of the 'sanctioned violence' of the OT
