Description
Liam O'Flaherty, widely acclaimed as one of the greatest Irish writers of the 20th century, was born in the Aran Islands in 1896 and grew up in a bilingual Irish-English world where life was a constant struggle against the elements, and where storytelling around the fire still passed the time on long winter nights. His creative output was substantial: writing in English and Irish, he produced novels, memoirs and short stories by the dozen. Some of his work was banned in Ireland - he was a rebel in his writing, as in his life. His works chart the ways and beliefs of a wild peasant world before it ws eclipsed by modernity.
