Jean-Francois Marmontel (1723-1799), French historian and writer, acquainted with Voltaire, he remained influential for decades: John Ruskin named him as one of the three people in history who were the most influential for him, and in his autobiography, John Stuart Mill credits another of Marmontel's works with curing him of depression.
