In Rise Above It All, Dick Falkenbury tells the cautionary tale of a city that failed to built a monorail mass-transit system approved by its voters. Falkenbury's tale reads like a novel. There are heroes struggling to make grassroots democracy work. There is a cast of wonderful volunteers, oddball supporters and even a few scary people on the fringes, all brushing up against the monorail along the way. And there are a few late-comers who overtook this populist movement with a very different agenda. The book is part Seattle history and part love note to the city that Falkenbury loves like family. He tells the story with robust, laugh-out-loud humor.
