Kinsey-Howard was not a historian, he was a journalist and activist in Montana during the mid-20th century. This book is a fascinating and readable introduction to Montana history which can be wonderful or horrible, depending on who writes it! Kinsey-Howard's book shares qualities of very good

travel-writing, it is engaging and exciting, covers a wide range of topics many historians don't seem to notice. The book is divided into chapters that stand alone, and is excellent grounding for those visiting the state who would like a deeper understanding of the forces at work in the Rocky Mountain west.
