The title refers to the year Brautigan spent in Japan. The trip is recorded here in wonderful haiku poetry. For my money, Brautigan's best work.

Brautigan spends a month and a half visiting Japan, and keeps a "diary" by writing poetry. The individual poems aren't particularly good (he points out himself that the quality is "uneven"), but that's not the point. The book as a whole is wonderful, if somewhat self-indulgent.
