A classic, first published in 1824 and revised by the author in 1868, with original drawings by James Riddell. In the 1820's Chambers collected reminiscences and memoirs of the old and vanishing Edinburgh to compile this classic historical source, a labour of love. The history of major buildings and streets and other landmarks is given, with quotations from other publications and from the gentry of Edinburgh, including Sir Walter Scott, who recalled the history of the previous hundred years. Some ghost stories and other legends are included. A fascinating read for those who know Edinburgh and enjoy Scottish history.
