In a year made extraordinarily difficult by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the trainee teachers on the Art & Design PGCE course at UCL/Institute of Education (UCL/IOE) explored the role of 'instruction’ in both art teaching and artistic practice. Through a series of workshops they investigated the different ways in which instructions operate, and developed their own projects in response to the notion of ‘instruction’. This publication marks the conclusion of the fifth year of our partnership with UCL/IOE, where we work with students studying to become artist teachers. The exhibition Must Should Could that developed from this collaboration was presented as a virtual online version in May 2020. This publication contains the resulting projects and includes texts and images produced by the artist teachers, alongside a foreword written by Andy Ash, Lesley Burgess and Thomas Jones (tutors at UCL/IOE ) and Henry Ward (Creative Director, Freelands Foundation). Artists include Harifa Ahmed, Iqra Ahmed, Lucy Bradley, Emma Close, Holly Coupland, Katie Duke, Eppie Greenhalgh, Isobel Harvey, Lisa Haslinger, Alice Horn, Rebecca Hudson, Rebecca Hurn, Jordan Hughes, Kerry McGranaghan, Frances Marriott, Helena Maxwell-Jackson, Jazmyn Maher, Jenelle Marfo, Linnea Nilsson, Anna Rogers, Anoushka Seewoogoolam, Chloe Shirley, Molly Skinner, Holly Stenhouse, Christy Waddell, Laura Wend, Rachel Wilcock.
