In my opinion, the book "Wednesday" by Anne Bertier is a great book for young readers. The first thing I liked about this book was that it taught readers about the square and the circle and how they can be changed into other things. The square and circle transform themselves into different figures

and other shapes to show how you can manipulate them. About halfway through the book, the square starts to show off to the circle, transforming itself into all kinds of different things that discourage the circle because he can't do the same thing. The circle says, "Stop, Big Square, I can't do it!... You're showing off, I'm not playing anymore." They end up working together to create all kinds of different figures like ice cream, a flower, a pencil, a boat, a piece of candy, a clown, and many more. Another thing I liked about this book was its illustrations. The only objects and pictures in the whole book were the blue square and orange circle. This really allows the reader to focus on the text and observe the shapes as they change on each page, without the distraction of a busy background or other illustrations. I also really liked the big idea of the story which was to not only teach readers about the circle and the square and what they could create, but that when you work together, the outcome can be surprising and you can accomplish a lot.

Best friends Little Round and Big Square enjoy playing together, making themselves into all sorts of fun shapes and objects. But when Big Square begins to show off a bit, making himself (herself?) into all sorts of things that Little Round can't copy, it looks like their playtime is over. Then

Little Round suggests that they make shapes and objects together, and the real fun starts...

Originally published in France as Mercredi, this innovative concept book plays with shapes in an entertaining way, demonstrating how they can be taken apart and put back together again in new and creative forms. It also tells an engaging story about friendship, and the give and take necessary for successful play involving more than one participant. The book is simply designed, with lots of white space on the page, bold black typeface used for the text, and the blue and orange of its two characters/shapes arranged in interesting ways. Recommended to anyone looking for new and slightly different takes on the concept book devoted to shapes.
