It's so good, I read it in one day.

A beautifully illustrated book about how different animals sleep in different ways. It is essentially non-fiction, but the reader follows the owl "protagonist" as he discovers all of these different ways of sleeping. This book is useful for talking about nature, animals, and about differences and

similarities.

I really loved the illustrations in this book and I think that is what drew me to the book at the library in the first place. I like how the book points out all of our differences yet the unity of the fact that we all need sleep, even the owl although he sleeps during the day. It's a sweet bedtime

story that could be read again and again and again.

Very short; dark illustrations for night, but interesting to look at.

A fun bedtime story about how different animals sleep. Try to find the owl in every photo! Beautiful illustrations.

This is a cute bedtime story. It is about how although they have animals who are awake during that day time, they have others who play at night as this one owl watches. The owl keeps watch over all the other animals as they sleep, and steps in as our tour guide around the night. The illustrations

in the book are very cute and detailed, which will keep childern interesting while reading.

Beautifully illustrated -- really, I loved the drawings: whimsical floral and curvey patterns etched into the primary illustrations, paint-style washes, muted colors. (The note says the illustrations were created "by combining handmade painterly textures with digitally generated layers, which were

then compiled in Adobe Photoshop".)

But the text was just not as good: It depicts lots of different animals and how they sleep. In this way, it is reminiscent of "Everybody Poops", but not as fun; and of "When I'm Sleepy" by Jane R. Howard, but without as much of a frame to hang it on.

So, 4 stars because of the illustrations, some of which I wouldn't mind framing. But the story alone would only get 3.

Another wonderful book by Il Sung Na. This books shows different animals sleeping. It's a very calm book with muted colors and delightful illustration. I especially liked the giraffes sleeping in the clouds, so cute!

"When the sky grows dark and the moon glows birght, everyone goes to sleep..except for the watchful owl."
Some sleep quietly (the koala) while some sleep noisily (the elephant. Some sleep standing up (the horse) while some sleep while moving (the whale). Some sleep alone (the giraffe) while some

sleep together (penguins). A very simple but fun book!

We love it! It's a simple book. My daughter was impressed by the animal facts we found such as horses sleeping standing up and owls sleeping during the day and being watchful at night ;)

The illustrations are beautiful, portraying the world of sleep with whimsy in dreamlike colors and patterns. Effectively introduces young children to the universal importance of sleep while exploring differences between various animals and their sleeping habits.

Book Summary: This is a book about sleep. There is an owl that goes on a moonlight journey watching all the different animals sleep. The story has many different animals and explains that everyone sleeps differently. Some sleep standing up, some sleep on
Show More
the go. Some sleep peacefully all by themselves, some sleep together all cuddled up.

Personal Reaction: This was a very cute book. It informs the children about sleep and that everyone is different. We may be doing the same thing but it’s okay if we’re doing it different than someone else.

Extension Activities:
1. Discuss the many different animals and how they sleep, compared to how we sleep.
2. Choose an animal, research how they sleep than draw me a picture of tem sleeping.

Lovely pictures. Annoyed that the first sleeping animals were koalas. Koalas, like owls, are nocturnal.

Originally published in Britain as Zzzzz: A Book of Sleep, this lovely bedtime tale from Il Sung Na follows a "watchful owl" as he observes the many different ways in which his fellow creatures like to sleep. From cuddling koalas to snoring elephants, one-eyed birds to wide-eyed fish, everyone has
Show More
their own unique way of resting - including the owl himself!

I was lucky enough to come across a review copy of A Book of Sleep, which is due out in the US this September, and being struck by the cover art - which reminded me of the work of Chinese-Australian artist Shaun Tan - I immediately pounced. How glad I am that I did, as I have discovered another talented picture-book artist to keep an eye on! The narrative here is simple and effective, with a repetitive motif that will help lull bedtime listeners, but it is the artwork which makes this picture-book extraordinary! Using a combination of hand-painted and digitally generated materials, Il Sung Na creates a sense of depth and mystery in his pictures, with lovely little flourishes here and there. My favorite spread shows owl and fish gazing at one another, in wide-eyed astonishment.

Well worth the time of any picture-book aficionados out there, this gorgeous book is the first offering from this author/illustrator. I look forward to following his work in the future.
