Review:

"I Am Harriet Tubman" by Grace Norwich was a wonderfully well written novel. This was a biography of Ms. Tubman's 'struggles and success for both civil and women's

rights.' From the reading we find that Harriet Tubman not only escaped slavery by helping others but many times only to be found risking her own life in the process in her determination to 'create a better 'America.' All I can say is that you will have to pick up this read by the author to see just what all this series holds. Be ready for 'series features full-color illustrated covers, one-color illustrations throughout, a timeline, an introduction to the people you'll meet in the book, maps, sidebars, and a top-ten list of important things to know about each hero.' I found this a very interesting read and I would recommend this read to you as a excellent read.

I am Harriet Tubman was interesting and had a lot of good information. What I liked the best was that the book added necessary and helpful information in boxes, similar to a text book, but they were interesting and fun to read. Another thing I liked was how the facts at the end of the book, listed

as “10 Things You Should Know”, helped with refreshing my memory of the story. I also liked that they had “10 Cool Things to Know” because it had information that was not included in history class or stories. For example, a group of students who were upset that Harriet Tubman had not received her compensation from the U.S. government appealed to Hillary Clinton, at that time a senator of N.Y.. She got Congress to give $11,750 to the Tumban Home. Although this book was full of information, the glossary was not very helpful. A lot of bold words were not included and this confused me. The main idea in this book was to inform the reader or Harriet Tubman's life.

The way the book I am Harriet Tubman starts off is very smart and efficient for children. It begins with a brief introduction about Harriet Tubman and then give pictures and some information about people that will be talked about in the book. This is giving children a little help before reading the
Show More
book. When they come to a certain person in the book they can remember about who the person is or refer back to the front of the book for help. There is also a timeline which includes the main events that happened throughout Harriet Tubman's life. Although this is a chapter book, it includes pictures which help with getting a sense of what was taking place in Harriet Tubman's life. A great added touch throughout the book are facts about Harriet Tubman, that a person would not typically know. This makes this biography book more interesting. Some times biography books are boring and this text had different components that made it interesting and entertaining. I learned plenty of facts such as she suffered with narcolepsy and had terrible headaches. Also, in the back of the book there is a map of the underground railroad which can help students to get an idea when it is being talked about. And to top it all off this book has 10 Things You Should Know about Harriet Tubman which is a refresher for what was talked about in the book. It was a summary of information. This can be a great assistant for children because they can read all of the information and then forget things but the summary helps with that. This book also has a glossary and index in the back of the book. These are features of the book that make this a great book for children. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it helped me to learn things that I did not know about Harriet Tubman. This book went above the normal information taught about Harriet Tubman, which was a wonderful touch.
