Description

Dolley was a farm girl who became a fine first lady when she married James Madison. She wore beautiful dresses, decorated her home, and threw lavish parties. Everyone talked about Dolley, and everyone loved her, too. Then war arrived at her doorstep, and Dolley had to meet challenges greater than she'd ever known. So Dolley did one thing she thought might make a difference: she saved George Washington. Not the man himself, but a portrait of him, which would surely have been destroyed by English soldiers. Don Brown once again deftly tells a little known story about a woman who made a significant contribution to American history.

This was a truly fascinating book, illuminating a bit more of the life of the founders while illustrating the War of 1812 a bit more for its readers. I was incredibly impressed with the entire text. I would gladly add this to shelves in my library. It would be good reading for anyone willing to

give it the time it deserved. The author's note is equally illuminating and the mention of Aaron Burr caught my interest immediately. He introduced Dolley Madison to James Madison. Who would've thunk it?

This shows the life of Dolly Madison. She was a dutiful farm girl who threw parties and teas. She married James Madison and when the war came to her door she made a big impact on history by saving a portrait of George Washington.

This picture book tells the story of James Madison's wife, Dolley Madison. Everyone felt from the war between England and America, but Dolley did not. Instead, she made sure the painting of George Washington did not get ruined, fled the city with wagons and carts, and disguised herself to escape

the British ransack. She was very brave and was considered a hero. A good story to share about women of history.
