A well written collection of biographies of 19th century women, mostly from the west, who were determined and self-reliant. This book captured my attention because it did not reiterate the same well-known women but instead women known in their time for various reasons. I started reading the

sections on women I didn't know and was pleasantly surprised at the depth of their accomplishments. The vignettes were well written and a bibliography was provided for each woman. I would recommend this work for a quick introduction to some fabulous women.
