I've followed the author's blog for a few years now and had this book in my to-read pile for a while.

In Paranormalcy, teenaged Evie is a special agent for the International Paranormal Containment Agency. She's the only person who can see through the glamours of vampires, fairies, and werewolves,
Show More
and therefore she's the best at bagging and tagging operations to keep the rest of humanity safe. Evie doesn't regard her skill as that special. In her mind, she's normal compared to everything else she sees. That all changes when mass slaughters of paranormals crop up around the world, and it somehow connects to Evie.

This is a very fast read, but some of the elements in the world bothered me. The IPCA is supposed to be an all-powerful agency that all paranormals fear, yet their facility has almost no security. When the strange boy Evie is crushing on is in their holding, she "sneaks" to see him almost whenever she wants and it takes forever to get busted. What, they can't afford security cameras? This is YA, so of course there is teenager melodrama. I found the conflict between Evie and her surrogate-mother Raquel to be grating at times; I wanted to slap them both, especially regarding Raquel's blissful ignorance regarding the faeries. However, the romance is sweet. The banter between Evie and Lend sound very real. I do want to add that this has one of the most gorgeous book covers around, and it's also very accurate as to Evie and her dress.

I think perhaps my expectations were too high for this. I heard so many good things, and I knew the trilogy is a big success, but for me it didn't quite click.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were lovable even the psycho faeries. I loved how the book is filled with numerous supernatural beings. I can't wait to see what else happens. I love how the main character comes to find out what she is and how she accepts it and how she is able to do what

she has desired for so long. I love the fact that we have a strong female character who doesn't make stupid decisions.

This is the story of Evie, an orphan taken in and raised within the confines of the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA). She is both strong and sensitive as she tries to figure out her role in the larger scheme of things while attempting to be "normal". Lend, a shape-shifter, is
Show More
caring and oh so yummy, and it's nice to see a guy who's not telling the main character what she can and cannot do in the name of "love". I'm crushing on Reth, a faerie of questionable motives. (I've got a thing for bad boys, so sue me).

Even though there are vampires, werewolves, and mermaids involved the story is fresh and exciting and lovely.

I'm not one for spoilers, so I'll simply say you don't want to miss this book. I can't wait for Supernaturally!

W-O-W! *jaw drops* this book is bleeping incredible! I don't want to introduce any character besides Evie because I want everyone to be surprised and I want this review to be spoiler free. The main character Evie never had a real family and has worked for the IPCA since she was just a girl. Now she
Show More
tags paranormals so her agency can keep track of them and keep the world safe. She ends up capturing an unidentified paranormal, breaking into the Center and all hell breaks loose. Now she is trying to find out who she is while trying to stop a crazy killer.

From beginning to end this book captures your attention and your heart. If Evie were real in the "real" world (she is real in my mind..does that make me crazy?) she would by my best friend. She loves her teenage drama shows, her taser (AKA Tasey), and the color pink. I mean we could be sisters that's how much I relate to her, besides all the paranormal activity. I am so proud of how far Evie has come in just one book. She is a true kick-ass heroine that is trying to find her place in a paranormal world.

I could go on and on about this book but, I want everyone to read this book of greatness for themselves and see what all my fuss is about. The paranormal world Kiersten has created is amazing and very creative. I will be stalking Kiersten for the next two books in the series.

Evie is not the typical teenage girl. She sees through paranormal glamours and can totally kick paranormal butt, especially with her special pink rhinestone taser -- lovingly named Tasey. In being able to do so, she has become a priceless asset to IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency)
- an agency that "bags and tags" paranormals living in our world. One night, there is a break-in at the agency and Evie catches the intruder - a shapeshifter named Lend that is like no paranormal Evie (or anyone) has ever seen before. Evie is intrigued. But as Evie learns more about Lend and why he's there, the more questions come up for Evie about herself, as well as questions about the agency that she has called home for so long.

Take the humor and wit of some of my favorite urban fantasies, mix in my favorite paranormals, and add a dash of teenage drama and romance - and you have Paranormalcy. Honestly, this is probably the most refreshing paranormal YA book that I've read for 2010. It's the perfect mix of light and dark, as well as action and a little bit of fluff.

For me, Evie is a perfect example of what I would call the best YA teen heroine in a fantasy story. Yes, she can kick butt and take names like it's no one business, but she's also still just a teen that yearns for a taste of normal teenage life. She's flawed, isn't perfect, and can whine with the best of them. Yet at the end of the day, she's still herself, who she wants to be and she's a fierce friend who sticks up and avenges her friends like it's no ones business. Reading reviews in the past, I thought I was going to get an overdose of uber-girly, "OMG, PINK!" moments. While Evie does love the color pink, it's not unbearingly so and, honestly, she makes it really cute. That, and her obsession with a teenage drama tv show. It's adorable.

And the guys? Yeah, we can't have a story without some hot guys ... and we definitely got that as well. You can't help but love Lend and Reth? Well, he frustrates you to no end, but there's the intrigue there as well! I can't say that I'm a huge fan of how the vampires were portrayed to look under their glamours, but I was able to look past that to enjoy the story.

White's voice and writing was just ... perfect. I don't know how else to describe it. She's excellent at provoking your emotions at just the right spots. When Evie is sad, you're sad. When she's happy, you're happy. When she wants to slap Reth, you want to jump into the story and do it for her. There are questions throughout that story that are sometimes answered and some that may stay with you until the very end - maybe even through the next book. When I finished this book, I was completely satisfied with what I had just read.. but I was definitely left with a small thirst to quench with the next book.

This book is so bleeping FANTASTIC! I LOVE Evie, I want to be her friend! And Lish's, she's awesome too. We definitely need more Lends' in the world too. I think it'd be a better place if we did.

Paranormalcy was every-bleeping-thing I wanted in a YA novel! It has spunky characters, a Good Vs. Evil thing going on, and awesome writing.

I completely fell in love with Evie’s character. Her voice captures you. Who doesn’t love a character with a pink blinged out taser?!? She is definitely
Show More
kick ass! Her “power” is cool to… it’s making me think Edward( from Twilight) = EEK and Hello Lend! I liked Reth(Evie’s EX) but he’s still a mystery to me and definite Man(Faery) Candy- who doesn‘t love a guy who says my love .And Lend, he’s so sweet, a definite keeper(with soft lips *ahem*)

I enjoyed reading Kiersten's writing. It was fresh and fun. I was hooked. I do hope that Evie will have a normal life; one that involves a boring old locker and a drivers license, but from now I can't wait to read what Kiersten has in store for us next. I guess I’ll have to wait* anxiously* until Supernaturally comes out *tear*

Perhaps it is the feminism that is deeply rooted somewhere in my subconscious, but it always makes me smile when a female protagonist can handle herself! Is she in need of a rugged male figure to save her? Certainly not. Armed with her wits and her charm, she kicks some behind solo and still has
Show More
time to look lovely doing it.

Thus, when I opened Paranormalcy and met Evie for the first time, I was instantly smitten. Oh Evie, how I love you. Her personality radiated off each page. Honestly her very presence in the book made the story a joy to read! There were moments where I found myself laughing out loud at Evie's outbursts and actions. From her obsession with the color pink and sparkles right down to her "bring it on" attitude, Evie takes her rightful place among my five favorite female protagonists of all time!

Now that I've adequately professed my love for Evie, let me move on to the story itself. In just two words, completely fabulous! Even if I wanted to, and I don't, there is not one thing negative that I could find to say about Paranormalcy. Evie's story is perfectly paced and engrossing. Kiersten White writes in a way that makes you feel invested in the characters and in their battles. Original, funny and filled with little jokes that you'll want to utter out loud despite the fact that no one else will bleeping get them. (Yes, I said bleeping.) This book is just a delight to read!

Of course my review wouldn't be complete if I didn't address the romance aspect now would it? No spoilers here, but yes there is a romance present. However it fits so seamlessly and stealthily into the story line that you don't feel like it takes over. Never have I minded romance in a book, quite the opposite. I find though that when it takes over, sometimes it is hard to believe in as a reader. Kiersten weaves her romance so expertly in that you'll find yourself falling in love too, but still on the edge of your seat about the action going on! Did I mention that this book is amazingly written? It is.

As I'm sure you can tell from my gushing and likely rambling words above, I loved this book. Mermaids, faeries, shape-shifters, romance, action, it's all there and more! After reading quite a few books that I appreciated but didn't love, it was such a pleasure to find this gem. I highly recommend this book my dear readers. If you were on the fence about buying it, get off that fence (as I can't imagine it's too comfortable perching there) and go buy a copy of this book! It comes out tomorrow, so you have no excuse.

Paranormalcy is one of the most unique young adult novels I’ve read. The cover has a strong feel of such seriousness, but oddly enough, the actual story does not. I’ve never read a book that had such a strong balance of dark and light, but I liked it. A lot.

Throughout the novel, Evie is
Show More
struggling to discover who and what she really is. I know what you’re thinking- this is basically the plot of a large number of other paranormal YA books out there today. But where it differs is Evie’s hilarious, bubbly attitude. It sprinkles the book with humor and lightheartedness, making me laugh and smile amidst the serious story underneath.

I’m a huge fan of her relationship with Lend, the mysterious shape-shifting boy with a watery body. Their friendship started off like a normal teenaged relationship, something I think Kiersten White nailed. We were only in Evie’s head, but instead of being mature and reasonable about her crush on Lend, she often spazzed. Which is what teenagers do. (At least, I was a complete teenage spazz, but maybe that's just me) I think a lot of authors forget about that sometimes.

Overall, I really enjoyed Paranormalcy. I definitely recommend it to all paranormal fans. A suspenseful mystery, cute boys made of water, gorgeous and potentially dangerous faeries, every paranormal creature on the spectrum, and humor … are you convinced yet?

I have been looking forward to this book for a long time. The first time I saw the cover I knew I was going to like it and I was right :) The book rocked! I love Evie, she is funny and she acts like a teenage girl, which is awesome. I know that may sound strange, but I have read some books, where
Show More
the character is supposed to be a teenager, but they act like anything but and that can get on my nerves. Not Evie, she is great, but I still don’t think we have figured out everything about her yet. In the beginning I thought I had her pretty well figured out, but I was wrong. I think this book is just starting to explore what she is and what she is capably of and I liked that.

I did see the potential love triangle in the beginning, but as the story progressed I felt as if that faded. Maybe I just don’t like one of the characters, I don’t know. I will leave it up to you to decide how you feel about each of the guys because I do not want to sway your decision one way or the other. For me though, the one guy clearly fell to into the background and the main love interest came to the forefront and I was completely okay with that :)

One thing I do not always get a chance to say about books in a series is how much I loved the ending. Why? Well, in Paranormalcy you were not left with some huge cliffhanger. Oh, there are definitely things that are left unanswered, but you are not left feeling like you were cheated of an ending. I know that happens to me sometimes, I get to the end of a book and I am so bummed because I didn’t get any answers. Not with this book, I still want to read the next books, I can’t wait, but I am happy with the way things were left. Does that make sense?

Overall this book was fun, mysterious and left me wanting more. I am so happy I got a chance to read it and if you have not then you should go out and get a copy too! Seriously, go now. :)

I bleeping loved Paranormalcy! There is no other book out there like it. It was so unique and all of the characters were a joy. This is a book not to be missed for paranormal lovers.

Evie was so adorable, witty, funny, and such a sweetie. A very down-to-earth girl in a not-so-normal world. Evie is
Show More
very precious jewel to the paranormal agency, IPAC, that took her in for her unique ability to see through glamours. She feels bored and lonely and wishes for a normal life, with a real family that will love her. I really felt for her undesirable life and was shocked that she could still be upbeat and peppy. The introduction of the dreamy shapeshifter Lend throws her for a loop and she starts to question IPAC and what they really want from her. She makes some pretty shocking discoveries about herself and wonders what the truth is. While Evie is trying to find out who she really is, there are unexplained paranormal deaths that are occuring and she is somehow connected to them. Evie is in for the ride of her life in Paranormalcy.

Lend was such a cutie. He was the perfect match for Evie, very laid back and sweet. Although I do tend to prefer guys with a wild side in my YA, I felt that Lend was the right guy for Evie. She would not have connected with a bad boy and her romance with Lend stays true to her character. Lend is a very unique shapeshifter, one I have never even heard of before. I really enjoyed learning about all that he could do and the background behind him. I especially loved the romance between him and Evie. It was very sweet and believable. I liked that they didn't immediatly fall in love. They took their time in getting to know and trust each other and I could understand their relationship.

Paranormalcy's plot was shocking and not at all predictable. I had no idea where the book was going or what would happen to the characters. I found myself crying with Evie during her heartbreaking moments, and laughing during her best ones. The ending of Paranormalcy sets it up nicely for a sequel and I can't wait to find out more!

Paranormalcy was so extraordinary and such a breath of fresh air! I am completely in love with Kiersten White's world and I can't wait to go back to visit it. Her characters were all likeable and the plot was unpredictable. So if you haven't read Paranormalcy yet, give it a try! You're in for a real treat!

Evie, main character of Paranormalcy by Kiersten White, has an interesting job. She tags and bags paranormals for the IPCA, an international organization which tracks, you guessed it, paranormal creatures. It's a hard job, but somebody has to do it. With her pink taser, aptly nicknamed Tasey, Evie
Show More
takes these creatures down. Did I mention her BFF is a mermaid and that Evie wears a lot of pink? Clearly, she would be my friend if she were not fiction.

Paranormalcy exudes fantasticisms. First, there are the cute outfits Evie wears. Normally I could care less about fashion (pretend you don't see Cosmo in the corner), but honestly, I want Evie's boots. Read the description. They are cute dot com.

Second, the boys. What YA is complete without boys? Yes, yes, I know a lot of YAs actually are complete without this. Now! One boy described is sort of a dingus. He's all let me touuuuuuch you! And actually makes me think of that irritating game where you hold your finger up to someone and go 'I'm not touching you', only he's actually touching here. The other boy though, Lend, is quite adorable, plus he can shift into your ideal of hot. Sign me up please.

Third and best is Evie herself. Sure, she whines quite often, but girl's never gone to school or really lived a normal teenage life. I know, what a tragedy never experiencing the hell that is high school, but the grass is proverbially greener on the other side. Now, through the whining shines Evie's marvellous voice. I legit laughed out loud when she was explaining why she would much rather capture zombies than vampires, because vampires are gross and dead but they think they are hot and sexy, whereas zombies know they are gross and dead. Also, because of Evie, I look at lockers in a whole new light. Clearly, they are nowhere near as lame as we all thought.

I enjoyed the fact that Paranormalcy was pure unadulterated fun. I'm not sure if this is a series, but I wouldn't mind hanging out with Evie some more, and I absolutely look forward to more from White as she puts the fun in para-fun-normal

In the sea of paranormal books, every book promises something new and different, yet very rarely do the stories step outside of the box and bring something unique. Although there are many of the same paranormal creatures, Paranormalcy succeeds in bringing something fresh to the genre.
Evie is
Show More
relatable in that she has no control over any aspect of her life, and all she wants is to be a normal teenage girl. When she meets Lend – a creature unlike any she’s ever seen, but also a boy around her age – she is drawn to him. Not in the sense of, “Once I saw him, it was as if our hearts merged into one and I could not bear to be without him,” but in the normal teenager way of thinking, “Oh bleep! He’s kinda cute and my age and I want to know more about him.” They talk. They laugh. She is intrigued by the fact that he goes to a real school and has a driver’s license. She’d love to kiss him, but even the thought of him touching her hand sends thrills through her. In short, it’s real.
As for the paranormal aspect of the book, it was nice to read something that wasn’t predictable from the first page. Evie discovers things about her past, things about the IPCA, and things about the outside world that make her question if everything she believes is all lies, whether who she is is who she wants to be. It is an existential crisis like so many people have at that age (or maybe a little older), but her choices have repercussions that can affect the entire paranormal world.
This is a fun story, but it’s not fluff. It’s entertaining, but it’s not mindless. And it is a great start to the series.

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but
Show More
still. Normal.
Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. (tSummary from Good Reads)

Evie has to be one of the most likeable characters in the weird world of paranormals that I've ever met. She is funny even if she thinks she isn't, especially with the comments she makes to herself in her head. She's smart, smarter than the people she works for who trust faeries to work for them. She used to be in love with one, but now she knows he's trying to use her for something. Something not good. But no one will listen. She's lived most of her life in the cold sterile environment of the IPAC where she goes out and tags and bags paranormals because she has an unusual talent of being able to see through the glamour of paranormals to their true selves. She's able to identify the bad guys.

Then something she's never seen enters IPAC. Actually, he breaks in. And she captures him. With her pink bedazzled taser she named Tasey. And that's when life turns upside down for her. He tells her more about the thing killing paranormals and about life outside IPAC. She gets excited about lockers and driver's license. It all seems so unreal to her. Paranormals seem normal to her. Then her world is turned upside down and she gets to experience all these things for the first time. She can't go back to IPAC, she doesn't have a family, so where can she go? And all the things she's learning about IPAC, the bad things they do, true? What did she really know about them? Can she trust her knew friends and will she bring the thing that's killing paranormals to her doorstep?

I read this in one night. It was so engrossing. It started off light and easy and progressively got more complex, with trying to figure out who this thing was that was killing paranormals was and what the prophecy was trying to say. Reth the faery that kept touching her and filling her with fire was increasingly scary showing once again that faeries aren't to be trusted. Their is no sense of trust at IPAC. Evie is only given information on a need to know basis. And she always wants to know more. The story is told from her point of view and she really does have a great sense of humor which lightens tough situations. She grows from just accepting her life to wanting more, wanting school and a family and a boyfriend, a locker and a driver's license. She wants to be a normal teen. I think there will be a sequel. The writing was seamless and all the characters where easy to understand. I loved Evie and Lend. (I know I didn't mention him. Read the book). I don't trust IPAC or Raquel. But we'll see. I hope Evie gets to have a normal life.

I definitely recommend this book for any middle schooler on up. Swear words are 'bleep" and there is no sex. Such a great book by a first time author! I just loved it!

Evie works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency. She is one of the few humans who can see through the glamour of paranormals, to what they really are. Evie's best friend, Lish, is a mermaid. Evie apprehends a shape-shifter named Lend, and is quite attracted to him. Evie also has had

a dangerous relationship with a fairy named Rath, who insists on being in her life. Something is killing off the paranormals, and no one can figure out who or what is causing the deaths. Evie starts to realize she has a connection to the deaths, but what that connection is, isn't clear.
This book has it all; werewolves, vampires, hags, and creatures you haven't even heard of. I predict that most students will read this book in one sitting, and teachers will hate it because students will neglect their homework in order to finish the book!

This was another teen paranormal book that I was a bit reluctant to read, since some of the popular teen series I have read lately have been kind of disappointing. I kept an eye on it though and the reviews were flattering, so I decided to give it read. I am glad I did, this was a wonderful book. I
Show More
listened to it on audio and the audio book was well done, the person who reads matches Evie's personality perfectly. Paranormalcy is the first book in a planned trilogy; the second book Supernaturally is due out Fall of 2011.

Evie works for IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency). She tags and bags paranormals to keep both the paranormals and the rest of human society safe. Evie's most unique ability is that she can see through any glamor; which makes her invaluable to the IPCA. This is why sixteen year old Evie hasn't left IPCA since she was eight, unless she is on a bag and tag job. Then a mysterious paranormal is caught going through the head of IPCA's office and he is unlike anything they have ever found before; his name is Lend and he befriends Evie during captivity. Evie then finds that paranormals are being killed at an alarming rate and IPCA needs to figure out why before whole species of paranormals are wiped out. As if crushing on Lend, finishing homework, and trying to save paranormals isn't enough...Evie has to deal with her fairy ex-boyfriend Reth who keeps trying to literally steal her heart...

Evie is a wonderful character. She is tough, snarky, loves to shop, loves pink, and is lonely. She is grateful for her place in IPCA but yearns to be part of the outside world. She is a fun character that I really enjoyed reading about and listening too...she was just so real, yet tough at the same time. Of course the other awesome character was Lend, he has a depth and a sensitivity to him that you don't see in a ton of teen male leads. The way Evie and Lend banter back and forth is funny, engaging, and shows the wonderful chemistry they have together.

There is a lot of action in this book and that is tempered with some interesting scenes dealing with Evie's struggles against Reth and with some tender scenes between Evie and Lend. The plot moved at a fast-clip making the book hard to put down. I really enjoyed White's writing style, she really nailed the dialogue between characters and made the book very natural sounding and easy to read.

White has also built a great world here. It is a complex world with a lot of depth but the reader is introduced to it effortlessly. The book wrapped in a wonderful way, but left a few tantalizing questions unanswered. I was impressed with the completeness of the story and eager to read the next book Supernaturally to see what happens to Evie and Lend. Really this was a great book and I highly recommend it. It was refreshing, fun, and something readers of teen paranormal books should really enjoy. It was an overall feel-good and uplifting book and just lots and lots of fun.

Overall a great read. For a while I was a little put-off by teen paranormal books because series like The House of Night, Wicked Lovely, and the Wolves of Mercy Falls have been okay but nothing spectacular. This book blows all of those out of the water. I also recently read Nightshade by Andrea Cremer; this was another really excellent young adult paranormal series that is something different. So pick up Paranormalcy and read it; and if you are looking for something else awesome check out Nightshade too.

16-year-old Evie, the only known human who can see through paranormals’ glamours, works for the IPCA, capturing and tagging stray paranormals in an effort to keep track of them and keep them under control. This is normal life for her, until the day a shapeshifter boy like nothing she has ever
Show More
seen breaks into headquarters and is captured. Against her boss’ wishes, Evie befriends the shapeshifter, named Lend, who forces her to question her role in the IPCA. Does she really have free will, or is she as trapped as the paranormals she captures?

On top of that, however, it appears that there is something out there that is threatening the existence of all paranormals…and Evie might be in the center of it, if the fairy Reth’s extra attention towards her is any indication.

PARANORMALCY is a fun, fast, and furious new read, a wonderfully fresh addition to the YA paranormal genre.

Kiersten White’s debut novel contains elements that will appeal to both the girly and the tomboyish. For instance, Evie has an incredibly female-power role of policing paranormals, getting to kick butt and show off her combat skills. But at the same time, she also LOVES her fair share of girly stuff, from the color pink, to fashion, to flirting with cute boys, to naming her belongings. Evie’s snarky but assuredly feminine narration had me grinning like an idiot from cover to cover. I typically don’t even like girly-girls all that much, but Evie’s personality balanced the book’s darker, more sinister plot.

PARANORMALCY is not your typical YA paranormal read: indeed, it has more in common with an elaborately written adult urban fantasy series. While the book doesn’t dive too deeply into the potentially interesting topics such as what the world outside of IPCA headquarters looks like, I appreciated how it brought up thoughtful questions about the distinction between employer vs. prisoner, true free will vs. imposed (though still broad) boundaries, and more. Kiersten White has created a marvelously complex paranormal world that I’d be excited to read more about in sequels.

Bringing the feminine to the gritty urban fantasy genre or complexity to an already female-oriented paranormal genre—whatever way you like to spin it, PARANORMALCY is one heck of a great read. Evie’s story reads smoothly, a breath of fresh air. I can’t wait for more!

I liked this book. I want to start off by saying that because even though I enjoyed it, the book had some problems for me. Let’s talk about what I liked first.

I thought the initial premise of the novel was very original. I’ve not encountered a novel where the lead character is a paranormal
Show More
teenager working for an agency that governs paranormals. Very different and I really liked that angle.

I liked the characters. Evie was sweet and enchanting. I found her paranormal ability to be quite interesting and unique. I loved that her bestie, Lish, was a mermaid. The character Lend was also very interesting and I totally rooted for Evie and Lend to hook up. Additionally, I loved the variety of paranormal characters in the book. Generally, you get vampires, werewolves, and witches, with a sprinkling of faeries here and there. White brought mermaids, hags, trolls, elementals, and more to her story. I really enjoyed that aspect of the novel.

OK, let’s talk about what I didn’t like. The story felt fractured to me. What do I mean by that? Well, I will tell you. The beginning of the novel starts off with Evie the paranormal working for the agency, trying to be a normal teenager in an extraordinary situation. That covers the first half of the novel. The second half of the novel, which involves the faery prophecy and a creature that is killing paranormals, felt to me like I started reading an entirely different book. I liked both parts of the novel but they didn’t exactly feel like they fit together. Evie also really changed as a character for me in the latter half of the novel. She was so bubbly and outgoing in the first half and not so much in the second.

It was jarring to me as a reader to have this abrupt shift the plot and characters.

Also, the faery prophecy and Evie’s role in that prophecy, which relates to her paranormal ability, was poorly explained. I am still not sure I understand what happened or why it happened. I don’t want to say much more because I don’t do spoilers, but the question of why can Evie see through glamours wasn’t resolved for me in any meaningful way.

Overall, I liked the book. I was entertained by the story and characters. I will definitely check out the sequel.

This is the most exciting and entertaining books I have read in a long time. It took me only 2 days to read it & I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I can not wait until the next book comes out.

There is no book like this one I have read lately. Eve deals with all sorts of creatures and demons but finds herself drawn to a boy, who is special too. As the unfolds you want to see what happens next. When the story ends you are left craving more.

Peachy Paranormalcy

This book gets a pretty 4 out of 5 gnomes for being extremely funny and chock full of paranormal goodness. The names of the chapters always give you a feeling about what's going to happen in the chapter and are usually pretty humorous with names like "Soul Suck", "Hey, Stupid"
and "Oh, Bleep." A lesson learned is that faeries cannot be trusted no matter how much control you think you have over them. I love the humor throughout and the tone does get much darker later in the book with more than one death.

Evie is an agent of the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA) and has been with them ever since they found her as a child. She is very special because she can see through the glamours that paranormals use. She gets to go after and contain things like hags, vampires and werewolves. Her weapon of choice is a pink taser that she has named Tasey.

She has a kind of family in the Center where she lives. Raquel who's in charge of the Center is the surrogate Mom and guardian of Evie. Evie's best friend Lish is a mermaid. She runs a lot of the technology side of the center and schedules the pickup of the agents when they are in the field. Lish can't talk normally so everything is translated in a robotic voice which leads to Evie and Lish cursing by saying the word Bleep. Having Bleep as a curse is bleeping genius and I know made me laugh more than once.

The two love interests are Lend and Reth. There is a clear winner in who Evie will choose because one is pretty darn crazy. She meets Lend unexpectedly and they seem to be interested in each other right away. Lend is a great character because at first you are not even sure what he is because he can change his appearance to look like anyone and in his true form he's practically invisible. Reth is a faerie so of course he's good lucking but he also seems to have his own agenda concerning Evie. Overall Reth is extremely creepy and overly attached to Evie.

Lend and Evie work very well together because she can see through his shifting to the real him underneath (like his Mom says, they balance each other.) He also accepts Evie for who she is even when she thinks that he shouldn't.

The bad guy in this book is pretty bleeping scary and Evie seems to have a connection to them. The big bad of the story thinks what it's doing, killing paranormals, is the right thing to do. I was also started to be reminded of the terminator in Terminator 2 with how unstoppable the bad guy is.

There are lots of questions and mysteries surrounding Evie and her future. I can't wait to see where she goes from here and what happens next.

Favorite Quotes/Passages

"Wait - did you - you just yawned!" The vampire's arms, raised over his head in the classic Dracula posed, dropped to his sides. He pulled his exaggerated white fangs behind his lips. "What imminent death isn't exciting enough for you?"

"Oh stop pouting. But, really, the widow's peak? The pale skin? The black cape? Where did you even get that thing, a costume store?"

"Lish tried to swear--which is always funny, because the computer won't translate it. It went something like this: "Bleep stupid bleep bleep faeries and their bleep bleep bleep obsessions. He had better stop bleep bleep bleep the bleep bleep rules or I will bleep bleep bleep the little bleeeeeeeeeeep."

"You could try. And I could taser you again so hard you wouldn't wake up for six hours, giving you even less time to make it to Romania. So, can I keep reading you your rights?" He didn't say anything, and I picked up where I left off. "If you fail to report within the next twelve hours, you will be terminated. If you attack any humans, you will be terminated. If you attempt to remove the tracking device, you will be terminated. We look forward to working with you." I always thought that last line was a nice touch. "

What I Learned

* That I just plain prefer paranormal books with a quirky sense of humour
* Man I wish I had Evie's gifts
* Teens are so lucky, that they have all these fun choices for them to read, better than what we had at their age (wow, I'm feeling old today)

Who should/shouldn't read

* Teens and adults with a sense of humor and a love for the paranormal
* Buffy fans would enjoy
* Fans of Jennifer Estep, MaryJanice Davidson and Julie Kenner will also enjoy

I got this book from the public library, because so many people had written amazing reviews about it

There’s only one word that can describe Evie: cute. Everything about her is cute. I enjoyed reading what she was thinking and her actions are just like what a teenage girl would exactly do. This was accurately done and very well written. I thought the plot was good and kept my attention. It
Show More
flowed smoothly and things were explained, yet still leaving the reader with questions that will be answered in the next two books. There’s a good healthy mix of romance, action, and comedy to keep the reader entertained throughout the entire novel. Some of the comments made by Evie made me laugh out loud, and the budding romance between her and Lend is a nice read.

I also really liked Evie’s friendship with Lish. They seemed like such a wonderful pair despite large differences between the two (Lish is a mermaid). I thought they were the perfect best friends pair I have ever read so far. Now in regards to the Evie’s romances, I’m not so sure if there’s really supposed to be some love triangle happening. I don’t think so since it looks like Evie and Lend are pretty well off together. Reth keeps on coming in the way but I found him absolutely revolting and definitely not boyfriend material. He’s like a real annoying fly but at the power of ten.

So, the plot’s great. The characters are pretty well done. The other reviews and opinions seem pretty accurate about the book. So why do I feel as if I didn’t enjoy this book much as others did? For starters, Evie’s obsessed with the color pink. I personally can’t stand the color and go out of my way to avoid it. She’s so girly it’s making me think she’s a book version of Barbie. Perhaps I’m so used to reading tomboy characters, or characters filled with sharp wit sans the cuteness. So this is a rather huge contrast and change that I had to adjust to. Actually, Evie started getting annoying after the first few chapters. However liking the color pink isn’t the only reason. It’s her constant descriptions of Raquel’s sighs. That got really old. REALLY FAST. I don’t care what kind of sigh Raquel did, just keep the story going! to me, it was silly and the constant repetitiveness of it got to me and sad to say, it made a large negative impact on my opinion of the book. If it wasn’t for these little things I probably would have enjoyed it much better. Perhaps I’m too used to tomboyish, mature like characters to properly enjoy Evie.

It really is a wonderful book and I probably will read the next two books following this. I’m only hoping Evie won’t get as annoying (ie: tone down the color obsession..and the descriptive sighs)..because if this persists, it may just sway me to not pursue this series at all. Yet I do recommend this book to those in love with YA paranormal urban fantasy. It really is worth the read.

Kiersten White’s debut novel is fun and fast-paced drawing readers into the secret world of paranormals where vampires don’t look like Edward and the things that go bump in the night really do exist. Evie, the main character and narrator, is a spunky heroine with a sharp tongue who is very
Show More
reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in her tone and demeanor – right down to her fashion sense and her rhinestone encrusted taser, affectionately named Tasey. While her ability to see through paranormals’ glamours makes her unique, she still longs for the normal things in life – a school locker, a driver’s license, a date to prom, college plans – all things that teens can relate to. The mystery surrounding the paranormal deaths, the undercurrent of danger that surrounds Reth, and the budding relationship between Evie and Lend keep the plot moving and the reader thoroughly engaged. The book loses a little steam in the second half when Evie and Lend escape the Center and a new character, Vivian, enters the storyline. The focus shifts to the faerie prophecy and hints at a conflict between the two faerie courts that somehow involves paranormal souls – there are several loose ends that will hopefully be tied up in future installments. Regardless, White offers a fresh take on the supernatural romance craze that is currently sweeping through young adult literature, and with its spot-on cover, Paranormalcy, is sure to be popular with teen readers.

I loved Paranormalcy. I made my mom read Paranormalcy and she stayed up till 3am. Haha. Paranormalcy rocks.

Evie is awesome. She's this girl who wants to go to high school and have friends and a life like she sees on her favorite TV show, Easton Heights. But even though she can't have that cause she

stuck at IPCA, she makes the best of the situation. Awesome.

I really like Lend, too. He's such a dreamy boy. And their first kiss...so sweet. (did i spoil anything with that comment?). I had to read the scene for a second time. And a third. Possibly a fourth. *sigh* Their friendship in the beginning is so well built and then when they kiss...anyway, I like their relationship.

One of many favorite quotes:
Evie: "But--oh no!...You're grounded! Are you gonna climb out the window and steal a car?"
Lend: "Yes, because I'm insane and this is one of your television shows."

The story is original and exciting and hilarious. Who wouldda thought, a containment agency for paranormals? But of course there is another side to every story...and we get it.

I'm excited for the next book because there is so much more story to tell. Ahhhh! Can't wait.

There are a lot of things that I liked about this book, a lot of plot points that really made this book wonderful to me. But I don't want to give spoilers. So just know that it's awesome. Besides, if you're like me, going into a book without knowing much of anything is the best because it's all a surprise.
