This is a wonderful and intricate uber lesbian romance, set in the 1770s - 1780s. It involves a white Scottish frontier woman and a "two-spirit" Lakota woman - i.e., a woman who is physically female but raised as a warrior - equal parts male and female in the Lakota eyes, and highly respected for

it.

I won't attempt to explain this story beyond that, because I could never do it justice. But it was one of the best lesbian romances I've read in a very long time, and that's saying something.

A word of caution: This book requires either a facility with languages (which I definitely do NOT have) or a rather high level of patience on the reader's part. The Lakota language appears all through the book, in the dialogue and descriptions. There is a Lakota dictionary at the end, and I found myself consulting it at least a dozen times per page until I became somewhat familiar with the words. Very frustrating at first, and I can see how many might just give up altogether. However, I persevered, and I am so VERY glad that I did. This was a wonderful, intricate story. Any fans of the uber-Xena genre will love it. I know I did.
