Description
In a breakthrough book first published in 1991, the authors address the dynamics in churches that can ensnare people in legalism, guilt, and begrudging service, keeping them from the grace and joy of God's kingdom.Written for both those who feel abused and those who may be causing it, The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse shows how people get hooked into abusive systems, the impact of controlling leadership on a congregation, and how the abused believer can find rest and recovery.

Great book to help christians recognise the behavioural patterns of leaders in churches that abuse power. Jesus is the head of our church, not man!

I think this book is very good for helping those who are in abusive systems to realise that they are, and to reassure them that they are not the ones in the wrong. It is excellent at the "Diagnosis" part of that process, but I am not sure it is quite so good at helping people deal with the

consequences of that abuse. That might not be what it's intended to do, but I would have liked to see some more material on helping people to deal with the baggage of having been in manipulative or abusive spiritual environments. Show Less
