Description

The seminal work by one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, Physics and Philosophy is Werner Heisenberg's concise and accessible narrative of the revolution in modern physics, in which he played a towering role. The outgrowth of a celebrated lecture series, this book remains as relevant, provocative, and fascinating as when it was first published in 1958. A brilliant scientist whose ideas altered our perception of the universe, Heisenberg is considered the father of quantum physics; he is most famous for the Uncertainty Principle, which states that quantum particles do not occupy a fixed, measurable position. His contributions remain a cornerstone of contemporary physics theory and application.

1) Reality exists
2) There is stills determinism for big objects (e.g., us)
3) We can't have absolute knowledge of nature's laws

"The fact that physics has recently opened up vast new thresholds is well known. It has not done so, as this remarkable work shows, without modifying basic philosophical and scientific concepts—the pillars, in fact, of cultures and civilizations. This, says F. S. C. Northrop in his introduction

) Much has been written of the political significance of nuclear research. But little has been said to date of the implications of discoveries that have pushed Homo sapiens into a situation as remote from the immediate past as it is from classical and medieval times."

This was a history of physics and the philosophy of natural science, while at the same time being a defense of the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum theory. It is grounded in the argument between classical physics and quantum physics that was then ongoing at the time of publication. Heisenberg

gives equal time to the detractors of the Copenhagen Interpretation, even as he refutes each one. It is an interesting read today, as much of the old argument has been proven obsolete. A rather difficult read, it is still very much worth the time to complete.
