Description

"Spanning nearly three thousand years of history-from the ancient Secession of the Plebs to the 2017 protests of the Confederate Soldiers Monument in Durham; from Sojourner Truth to Naoto Matsumura-the posters in Celebrate People's History pay tribute to the long-standing human legacy of revolution, activism, and grassroots organizing. In this book, contemporary artists imagine often-overlooked events and figures in movements for racial justice, women's rights, queer liberation, labor organizing, and climate justice. The second edition features nearly one hundred new posters, an expanded introduction by Josh MacPhee, and forewords by Rebecca Solnit and Charlene Carruthers"--

Celebrating People's History from Josh MacPhee is a visually stunning book that educates the reader ever so subtly through the appreciation of the art used at the front lines of many struggles.

While the posters included were designed to catch the eye of the public that might walk past where they

were posted, they also paid as much attention to educating them. And by extension, through this book, us. These posters often tell entire stories or histories in the one larger image. To accomplish both activism and education so effectively is quite impressive.

The second edition includes, I believe, about 100 new posters. I am not sure which ones, I don't have a copy of the first edition, so I will simply say that the selection here is really wonderful.
