This was initially interesting in depicting early mechanical flight nearly 20 years before the Wright Brothers. But there was very little plot and much of it read like a travelogue. It digressed into sheer tedium and I gave up on it 30 pages before the end as I could not make myself care what

happened next; the plot summary on Wikipedia was a perfectly adequate and quicker, less painful way to fill in the ending.

I've read a pile of Verne books over the years and I always wondered how one man could be full of so many ideas. Then I read this book and realized this is when he ran out of them.

As pointed out in other reviews, the plot is certainly less than in in other Verne novels - still, it is amazing that Verne foresaw so much of heavier than air flight. A fun read just because of this.
