I wasn't especially impressed when I first saw this book. A is for apple, B is for balloon, C is for cow, basic stuff. The only thing interesting was "X marks the spot" instead of "X is for X-ray or Xylophone".

Then I realized that I'd seen many of the creatures in Z is for zoo earlier in the

book.

So I re-read it. Several re-reads later, I realized that there was a tentative story in this book. Do the women and the man love each other? They write letters. Hearts are a periodic motif. The woman paints, the man explores. Do they miss each other?

So maybe a toddler won't understand that. But this is an alphabet book they'll read past toddlerhood.

Nicely illustrated ABC book. Illustrations have an interesting cracked glaze look. Each illustration contains a nested hint about the next plate. Kids love searching through the image to find it.

Pilobolus' The Human Alphabet and Jay's ABC books both give children creative ways of learning the alphabet. The Human Alphabet is a book of just what the title says - pictures of human figures creating the words that coincides with the letter. This book allows the child to use their imagination in

looking at the human figures and facial expressions to understand what word matches with the letter. Some of the pictures are a guess to me so I imagine children can come up with creative answers however there is an answer key in the back of the book. Imaginative and creative for preschool to elementary level learning the alphabet.

ABC: A Child's First Alphabet Book gives children a more straightforward look at the alphabet compared to The Human Alphabet. The illustrations are whimsical and simplistic and for each letter, an example is given: "Aa a is for apple." However the picture contains more objects associated with the letter than the one given so children will use their skills of perception to locate the remaining objects. Like The Human Alphabet, an answer key in the form of an index is given in the back of the book. For preschool to early elementary level.

Simple book of the alphabet. Each page gives a letter and word but the reader pays attention to the illustrations, they will notice other objects that also begin with that same letter. The illustrations are very bright and eye catching.

Alison Jay describes the Alphabets in a simple and creative way for young children to understand. This book as introduces upper and lower case letters that are in the alphabet . This book would be great to use in pre- k classroom. I would have a Read Aloud followed by questions that I would like

This book is beautifully illustrated. I love how each picture holds a clue to the next picture. You can look at this book over and over and something different each time.

A children's first alphabet book. Has a letter and picture on each page and gives a clue to what is to come on the next page.

I don't know what it is about Alison Jay's illustrations: I like them even though I don't love the style. It makes no sense, I know. The colors are great, and I think that's partly it.

This is a fine early alphabet book, with upper and lowercase letters and the classic _ is for ____ sentence highlighting the primary illustration. Jay cleverly inserts several other objects beginning with the same letter into her pictures. For example, on the A page, in addition to the large apple

central to the page, there is also an airplane, a ??? and a ???. The hardcover version includes a list of these other objects on the copyright page at the back, something sadly missing from the board book. Although the board book has a different cover than the hardcover and some of the double page spreads are slightly cropped, this is only notable on the C page where the cat is partially cropped and some of the windows of the house are missing.
