This book serves as a wonderful introduction to the history of European and American art music. The book is structured in an interesting way. Instead of being a simple chronology of music history, ranging from the Renaissance to recent trends in American music, it subdivides each time period into
Contrary to what other reviews say, this book is not full of details. Since it covers music ranging from the Renaissance to twentieth century American, it has only enough space to briefly touch on each period, and it allots a bit more space to delve into the seminal works of the relevant composers. Nevertheless, it is still very informative for beginners and "old hands" alike, yet if you seek detailed information on a certain period, instrument or composer, I would consult books that deal with those matters specifically.
