I don't think one has lived until one has had the chance to read some really fine short stories. If you like Mavis Gallant or O. Henry or Chekhov or Jane Rule, it is easier to realize that it is not worth it to be obsessed uniquely by novels. This is another rich form that is worthwhile to look at.

Being a Canadian, I actually was scared by some of the stark reality in these stories. ... As in, is this what it is really like to live in Canada? I don't think I can deal with reality that is this direct and in your face. But Jane Rule keeps you coming back because here vision of the world has no b.s. -- whatsoever. Once she's done with looking at something or somebody, there is no possibility left for lies or evading the truth. She is an all-wise seer.
