A little young for me (which is ok! I took a chance!). This is a followup to The Witch Boy, in which Aster is finally training as a witch, and his friend Charlie meets the new girl in town. Though Charlie does her best to befriend the new girl, she’s wary and has a dangerous secret, which of

course intersects with Aster’s witchcraft and his attempt to help his corrupted ancestor as part of his witch training. It’s charming and well-done and almost everyone is incredibly well-intentioned unless they’re acting from a place of deep hurt.

This is the second book in The Witch Boy series and I liked it even more than the first book. The illustration and story are well done and easy to follow. I also really love the themes of magic, family, friendship, and learning to be yourself.

Aster is allowed to learn witchcraft but not everyone

is happy with this choice. Charlie is having trouble with a new girl at school who sets a curse on her. Aster and his family try to help Charlie. Aster is also called on to help with his corrupted great-uncle as well.

Overall this is one of those amazing middle grade fantasy graphic novels that is wonderful for both kids and adults. I love the characters, the story, and the bright illustrations. I would recommend to those who enjoy graphic novels similar to Zita the Spacegirl, Mighty Ben, Cleopatra in Space, HiLo, and Amule

While falling a little short of the first book, this is a pretty strong follow-up that establishes an appealing Scooby gang for ongoing adventures, which I will gladly read.

The Hidden Witch picks up where the last book left off but we see that Aster is not the only one in his family unsatisfied with their lot in life. And to make matters more complicated, Aster's non-magical friend Charlie is being hunted by a dark piece of magic called a Fetch. Major themes: gender

norms, nefarious plots, finding your way, and being authentically yourself. 5/10 from me as I found it predictable and slightly boring.

4 stars for this book and the series so far. Not only is the artwork rich and adds to the storytelling, but I'm enjoying that the author is giving the reader more of the world and conflicts that the main character has to deal with. Presenting issues such as gender non-conformity in a

nonsuperficial, blase manner, but instead with an authenticity that doesn't speak down to a younger audience, is wonderful and powerful of this series and this sequel. Again, the artwork is beautiful with its bold and vibrant colors, which are very appealing and keep you reading and wanting more.

Really love the continuing story, and the ways these unconventional characters are just living their lives and helping each other. Kindness, community and diversity for the win!

A story about Aster and his friends being supportive and helping a new girl, who has developed her magical abilities without guidance.

The artwork for the first in this series, The Witch Boy, didn’t particularly appeal to me (and I’d mainly read it because I’d liked Ostertag’s artwork for

Sharon Shinn’s Shattered Warrior so much) but I really liked this one’s autumnal colour palette.

I flew through this book. It was just as good as the first book. I love that the story shows what can happen when people are bullied, even in their own family. This is a great book for middle school students.
