One day, in the woods a wolf eats a mouse. The mouse thinks he is done for but then he discovers a duck living in the wolf's stomach. The two become friends and are perfectly content with life inside the wolf. Then, one day, the duck and mouse have to leave to save the wolf's life. When the wolf,

in gratitude, offers them a favour - what will they ask for?
Mac Barnett and Jon Klasson have teamed up again to create another engaging picturebook. Children will love the idea of the duck and mouse living happily within the wolf complete with a kitchen, dining table, pictures on the wall and a record player. "You'd be surprised what you find inside of a wolf.” asserts the duck and indeed we are. Klasson's quirky illustrations show the pair of animals thoroughly enjoying themselves despite the lack of a window or two in the wolf's belly. The illustrations, with their earthy palette are much richer than the monochrome colour palette and stark shape of Triangle and complement the folktale-like style of this story. This is a fun book for older pre-schoolers and school-aged children but beware of reading to the very suggestible as they might become worried about what happens to the food they eat.

When a mouse is gobbled up by a wolf, at first he thinks that it is a catastrophe. Then he meets the duck who lives quite happily in the wolf's belly, and gains a new perspective - just because one has been swallowed, it doesn't follow that one should be eaten...

And so begins this surreally amusing

adventure from author Mac Barnett and illustrator Jon Klassen, who have collaborated before on such titles as Extra Yarn and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole. Although I appreciated the humor in Barnett's text, the real stand-out for me, in The Wolf, the Duck & the Mouse was Klassen's gorgeous artwork, which never fails to impress me with its expressive beauty. Although his imitators are legion at this point, nobody does stylized sepia-toned illustrations like Klassen! Recommended to Klassen (and Barnett) fans, and to anyone looking for children's stories with a somewhat quirky, oddball sense of humor.
