This was beautiful and kind of painful. The fence separating the family from meeting closely with their grandmother made tears spring to my eyes, and how the little girl still finds hope and strength to figure out a way to get her brother's present to their grandmother at the end was so lovely. I

adore how it became a group effort (in cheering her on). While it doesn't outright state what happens in the future, readers are left hopeful that in the future perhaps things won't be the same. We can help make a difference!

This book is a heart wrenching, fictional tale that embodies the struggles of immigrants and their families who are separated between the U.S and Mexico. I would use this in a social studies class to teach students about the pain caused by strict border restrictions. It provides a very real dilemma

in society that students should be educated on.
